Possible Championship Fights on The Horizon
* Nikola Sjekloca vs Edwin Rodriguez
When Anthony Dirrell(24-0, 21 KOs) injured himself in a motorcycle accident recently, it scratched his championship opportunity against Nikola Sjekloca(24-0, 7 KOs). The unfortunate incident also left the doors open for Edwin Rodriguez(21-0, 14 KOs). Sjekloca and Dirrell were set to fight each other for the vacant WBC super middleweight title that was left behind by Andre Ward. Both men are ranked #1 and #2 by the WBC. Dirrell who suffered a broken leg and hand will now be out of action indefinitely. Rodriguez is in Andy Lee’s camp helping preparing him for his championship fight with Julio Cesar Chavez jr, is ranked #5 by the WBC, and would love nothing more than to take Dirrell’s place for a championship fight.
* Chad Dawson vs Andre Ward
There is strong speculation that Andre Ward(25-0, 13 KOs) and Chad Dawson(31-1, 17 KOs) will do battle for Dawson’s Ring/WBC light heavyweight championship. Even a possible September 8th date has been mentioned either in Atlantic City or Oakland, California. Ward recently vacated his WBC super middleweight title for supposedly not wanting to fight his good friend Anthony Dirrell. A fight between Ward and Dawson will match up two of boxings upper echelon competitors. No word if the fight would be at a catch-weight.
* Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Paul “The Punisher” Williams
A few names have been thrown around for a September 15th fight against “Canelo” Alvarez. Miguel Cotto(37-3, 30 KOs) and James Kirkland(31-1, 27 KOs) have been the front runners. Now you can add Paul Williams(41-2, 27 KOs) to the list. Discussions have been taking place since yesterday with the fighters respected teams. If the Williams fight is made, “The Punisher” will have a significant height and reach advantage. Williams though has had problems with shorter boxers. Erislandy Lara and Carlos Quintana who are both 5′ 9″, gave the 6’3″ Williams all sorts of problems. Canelo’s youth and will could prove a deciding factor in this fight. Floyd Mayweather(43-0, 26 KOs) has also been mentioned as a candidate. With a jail term nearing, it is highly unlikely that Mayweather would be ready in time for a September 15th clash.
