“Razor” Ruddock’s Return: What does it mean?
Donovan “Razor“ Ruddock will be returning to the ring ten years removed from his last fight. Ruddock was one of the better heavyweight contenders in the 90’s that made a name for himself after going to battle with Mike Tyson on two different occasions. Usually when a fighter comes back after a long hiatus it is to erase the memory of his last bout he participated in. This is not the case here. The Jamaican born, Canadian raised Ruddock won his last ten fights prior to leaving the sport. His last recorded lost was in 1995 when he was stopped by Tommy Morrison in round six of a knockdown thrilling fight which saw both men hit the canvas.
So why would a man that won consecutive fights before retiring would want to step in the ring at the age of 48? It could be a lot of things. Can it be money, pride, resurrection, or all of the above? Only Razor knows for sure. Razor did file for bankruptcy in the late 90’s. All of the top heavyweights of the present day are on his mind. Chris Arreola, David Haye, Seth Mitchell, and others are mentioned by Ruddock as possible future opponents. Donovan will have to get some tune-ups before even thinking about tangling with those active heavyweights. He is showing signs of seriousness, reportedly weighing in at around 211 pounds now. We would have to go back 26 years the last time Ruddock was around that weight for a fight.
Of course he also wants to fight the cream of the crop. Ruddock claims Vitali Klitschko avoided him 11 years ago. It was Ruddock who had to back out of the fight due to an injury. World Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is also on Razors radar. Donovan describes Wladimir as a boring fighter and would want nothing more than to knock him out. The Jamaican has an uphill battle to get in place and challenge the Klitschko’s. He would have to first get ranked by one of the major organizations. That is if the Klitschko’s do not retire first. His chin will have to hold up as well. Ruddock has been dropped in a few of his high profile bouts and in some instances not coming back from them. We will have to sit back with a curiosity and see what unfolds. History will be against Ruddock.
