About two weeks ago, Miguel Cotto displayed one of his best efforts in the ring against Floyd Mayweather. Cotto gave Mayweather a much tougher outing than many expected. Indeed, Cotto came up short losing a competitive but unanimous decision. Cotto showed he was far from done, even stressing that he will make his return to the ring before the end of the year. The ex champion has to weigh in his options. The Caguas, Puerto Rico native can squeeze in one more big pay day before hanging up the gloves for good.
Let’s explore Cotto’s best options available:
1. Sául ”Canelo” Alvarez(40-0, 27 Kos)- Coming off his most impressive victory to date, a 12 round unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in the undercard of Cotto/Mayweather. Canelo showed his resiliency after getting cut early in the fight. He out powered and out hustled Mosley throughout the fight. Alvarez is the WBC 154 pound champion and that can lure Cotto into fighting the red freckled face Mexican. The Puerto Rican/Mexican angle is always a great sell. This fight could determine if Cotto can tame the young lion or if he is on his way out.
2. Julio Cesar Chávez Jr(45-0-1, 31 Kos)- If Cotto wants to attempt and become the first Puerto Rican four division champion, this would be the fight he should ask for. The WBC middleweight champion Chávez would present a difficult assignment for Cotto because of his height and reach advantages as well as his size. Cotto can make up for it with his experience and boxing ability. Miguel will make the most money fighting Chávez than the other two options. Can Cotto conduct business with Bob Arum again? Let’s see how the shots are called.
3.Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez(49-2-2, 28 Kos)- This would be the riskiest fight out of the three for Cotto. Martinez is a southpaw who has quick reflexes and is very athletic. The Argentine holds the lineal middleweight championship. Lately Martinez has been fighting with his hands low for the crowd’s approval resulting in more knockout wins. Maravilla’s best assets are what Cotto lacks. Cotto’s footwork is average at best and he cannot afford to fight with his hands down. He already swells up when covering his face. Martinez would maybe move back down to 154 to make this fight happen. It would be a big risk and a small reward for Cotto because of Martinez’s inability to bring in fans. Credit will be giving to Cotto if he makes this fight happen and becomes the biggest name Martinez has faced to date.
