Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (6/27/15)

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.

 Timothy Bradley (31-1-1, 12KOs) vs. Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9KOs)

Timothy Bradley is looking to get back on track, having not won a fight in nearly two years.  He’ll try to do so against Jessie Vargas on Saturday night in a bout for the WBO interim welterweight title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.  Bradley enters Saturday’s fight with just one loss on his resume and it will be the first time he steps in the ring this year.  He struggled in 2014.  He lost his rematch to Manny Pacquiao and fought Diego Chaves to a controversial draw.  Despite his recent struggles, Bradley has multiple wins over accomplished boxers.  Sure, he got a “Gift” Split Decision victory over Pacquiao in June 2012.  However, he has also beaten the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Ruslan Provodnikov, Joel Casamayor and Devon Alexander.

Jessie Vargas doesn’t have as many big wins as Bradley, but he hasn’t experienced much adversity in his career.  He enters the fight undefeated, last beating Antonio DeMarco in a defense of his WBA light welterweight title.  His most prominent victory was against Josesito Lopez, who was past his prime when he fought Vargas.  The unbeaten boxer made a significant change a month before the fight.  He switched trainers, saying goodbye to Roy Jones Jr. and deciding to prepare for Bradley under the tutelage of Erik Morales.  This won’t be the first fight for Vargas at 147 pounds.  He’s moved up in weight after stating how hard it was getting for him to make 140 pounds.  Bradley has fought at welterweight since his first bout with Pacquiao, though he also held titles at light welterweight in his career.

After Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fought to what much of the public deemed a “Boring” 12 rounds, the boxing world has been treated to exciting knockouts at the hands of Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto.  Bradley-Vargas might put on an entertaining bout, but it’s likely to last all 12 rounds.  Remember, only 12 of Bradley’s 31 victories have come via knockout and Vargas has not knocked out an opponent in any of his last 10 fights.  Word on the street several months ago was that a win for Vargas over Bradley would earn him a mega-fight with Pacquiao later this year.  That can’t make Bradley happy.  I mean really, Somehow, even as the A-side, this man gets treated like a B-side.  In fact, one could argue he’s being seriously overlooked.  As stated previously, Vargas is not a battle-tested welterweight.  Bradley has been in the ring and also beaten some of the biggest names in the sport.

Bradley is still only 31 years old.  No doubt, he will be looking to prove he has not yet declined to the point where he’s a mere stepping stone for other fighters.  Not only does Bradley’s skill, experience and grit make him the favorite in this fight, but stylistically the matchup is tailor-made to give Vargas fits.  Vargas has a good jab, decent hand speed and can move, but he does not have the power to keep Bradley off of him.  He has to hope Bradley gets “Old” overnight.  Bradley is fighting with a chip on his shoulder and this makes him a very dangerous fighter.  Jessie Vargas is going to get worked over and then some by a bigger, stronger and more motivated Timothy Bradley.  Let’s not forget however that this is boxing.  For several weeks now, I have had a bad feeling about this fight.  Hope I’m wrong and justice prevails. I just want the right man to win the fight.  My Pick: Bradley wins by Split Decision.

Here are my picks for some other fights taking place this weekend:  Oscar Valdez (15-0, 14KOs) over Ruben Tamayo (25-5-4, 17KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.  Dennis Hogan (21-0-1, 7KOs) over Kenny Abril (14-7-1, 7KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Alan Sanchez (15-3-1, 8KOs) over Steve Claggett (21-3-1, 14KOs) by Majority Decision.  Paul Mendez (17-2-2, 8KOs) over David Lopez (41-15-1, 23KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Erickson Lubin (10-0, 7KOs) over Ayi Bruce (23-9, 15KOs) by an 8th Round TKO.  Jamel Herring (11-0, 7KOs) over Oscar Cortez (25-2, 13KOs) by a 7th Round TKO.  Dominic Wade (17-0, 14KOs) over Sam Soliman (44-12, 18KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Gilberto Ramirez (31-0, 24KOs) over Derek Edwards (27-4-1, 14KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Jose Gonzalez (24-1, 19KOs) over Diego Magdaleno (27-1, 11KOs) by a 10th Round TKO.
