Jake Paul vs. Iron Mike Tyson on July 20 2024-All You Need to Know About The Modified Rules of This Unique Heavyweight Bout

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Dallas, Texas (May 8th, 2024)– On July 20, 2024, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in a unique sanctioned heavyweight bout which will be streamed on Netflix, former World Heavyweight champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, 50-6 with 44 knockouts, Henderson, Nevada, age 57 (turning 58 on June 30, 2024) will fight an eight rounder of two minute rounds against social media icon Jake Paul, 9-1 with six knockouts, age 27, Dorado, Puerto Rico, by way of Cleveland, Ohio.

The special rules were proposed by the event promoter, Holden Boxing LLC, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees combat sports in Texas, and who has officially sanctioned the bout. The two combatants will be wearing heavier 14 ounce gloves, rather than the standard 10 ounce gloves normally associated with professional boxing contests. The two fighters will not be wearing headgear, which would only be utilized in a sanctioned exhibition bout. Tyson versus Paul is not an exhibition.

This eight rounder consists of two minute rounds. Two minute rounds are normally associated with female professional boxing. However, there is an age gap of 31 years between the combatants. Former World Light Heavyweight champion Archie Moore fought and won his last professional bout at age 49 in 1963. Former World Heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, ‘The Galveston Giant’, fought his last exhibition at age 66 in 1945. Former WBC World Super Lightweight champion Saoul Mamby lost a 10 round decision to Anthony Osborne in the Cayman Islands at age 60 and nine months in 2008, the oldest boxer in an officially sanctioned bout to date.

Professional boxers age 36 and over in the state of Texas are required to undergo a mandatory series of special advanced medical tests fight week before being formally approved to compete. Tyson must pass those tests for the Netflix-streamed bout to go forward as scheduled. The shorter rounds favor the back in shape Tyson, despite his advanced age. The heavier gloves favor Paul, as heavier gloves will soften the blows thrown.

An official weigh-in for all fighters on the AT&T boxing card will be held before the contest. The complete card of boxers and bouts has not yet been posted on BoxRec. Knockdowns and knockouts will be allowed in Paul versus Tyson. A professional referee will be inside the ring. The fight result will go onto the respective records of both pro boxers. Three professional ring judges will score the bout as with all other professional bouts. All required ringside officials as well as medical personnel and the telecast commentators, will be at ringside.
