Boxing Sons of the Nigel Benn

Between 1987 and 1996, London’s controversial darling, Nigel Benn, ‘The Dark Destroyer’, figured into 13 consecutive WBC and WBO World Super Middleweight title bouts, finishing his career 42-5-1 with 35 knockouts. His last three bouts were titular losses, perhaps a fighter never the same after defeating the then World Middleweight champion, Gerald McClellan, who was permanently brain damaged after their February 1995 confrontation at London Arena ended in tragedy after Benn knocked him out in the tenth round. It remains a bout frequently reviewed by boxing experts.

Benn has two boxing sons, welterweight Conor ‘Destroyer’ Benn, and super welterweight Harley Benn. They do not weigh as much as their father. Their true talent-or not-remains a question mark.

Conor, age 22, 13-0 with nine knockouts, Essex, United Kingdom, will defend his World Boxing Association Continental Welterweight regional title on April 20, 2019, at 02 Arena in Greenwich. Conor won 20 of 22 amateur bouts in Australia before turning pro.

Harley, four days younger but also age 22 (The Benns have different mothers), Hornchurch London, United Kingdom, is 6-0, has a TKO win in his pro debut, and is a winner of five consecutive four-round decisions. Harley turned pro with no amateur experience, having boxed on the unlicensed circuit instead.

The Benn boys have youth, personal motivation, and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, courage is no match for an unfriendly experienced opponent. Two sons of the late World Heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison are undefeated and boxing too. Look, Chris Eubank Jr. just beat ex-world champion James DeGale. The odds do not favor the Benn brothers due to the obvious lack of an amateur pedigree. However, anything is possible, and Great Britain loves its boxing heroes. The world is watching the Benn boys, but it’s too early to predict if they can rise to the level of their famous father.
