Carson, CA (May 1st, 2016)– Wow! Thomas ‘Top Dog’ Williams Jr. and Edwin Rodriguez went at George Foreman versus Ron Lyle style in an all-offensive bombs away slugfest. Neither was yet out of gas, misses excused, when Williams landed a monster left hook to the head and finished Rodriguez. The referee called it a knockout. Rodriguez got up and felt he could continue, but the referee disagreed. Both fighters had predicted the bout would not go the distance in the outdoor bout featured at StubHub Center in Carson, California, on April 30, 2016.

They were right on the mark. The bout was fast and furious, like a replay of Marvelous Marvin Hagler versus Thomas Hitman Hearns. The bout was a firestorm while it lasted. Both fighters were slightly over 175 pounds (Williams 176 ¾ and Rodriguez 177 ¼) so the bout went off at cruiserweight. The slugfest set a furious pace as both men went for broke.

Williams Jr., a southpaw, 20-1 with 14 knockouts, Fort Washington, Maryland, came out swinging for the rafters, so it became a seesaw atomic bomb slugfest. The bombs can only miss so much. Eventually, something has to land. In the case of Edwin ‘La Bomba’ Rodriguez, now 28-2 with 19 knockouts, Worcester, Massachusetts, the bomb landed sooner rather than later at the end of round two. He arose all over the place from the land of the alligators.

For the world ranked Williams, whose long loss was to former WBA World Light Heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo, lucrative world title bouts with Adonis Stevenson and Sergei Kovalev (who next defends against Isaac Chilemba) are next.

If ever there was a fighter deserved of being considered the third best in the light heavyweight division after Kovalev and Stevenson, Thomas Williams Jr. is the man.

Result: Thomas Williams Jr. KO 2 Edwin Rodriguez, Cruiserweights (2:59)

Referee: Wayne Hedgepeth.  Bout declared knockout after Rodriguez got up from canvas.
