New York, NY (January 30,2013)–Not too long ago, I ran into Alexis Arguello Jr. at a boxing event in New York City, who works in New York City in the media industry, and was talking to him about his dad. According tro Arguello Jr., his dad, who was a Managua Deputy Mayor or similar, has just returned from a political trip to Puerto Rico for a Roberto Clemente memorial dedication when his dad’s political position and power were somehow lessened while he was gone.

Arguello Jr. believed his dad had been murdered, not the government claim of suicide, but never had access to his dad’s body as the investigation was closed and his father buried. Arguello Sr. had supposedly made his peace with the Sandinistas, but then again, maybe not as quiet as he led most people to believe. Like an old television Hawaii-Five-O or Mannix mystery, it’s one of those deaths which the world let go of, but which boxing historians like myself can never quite get over.
A three time world boxing champion best remembered for his two epic battles with Aaron Pryor, Arguello Sr. finished his career 77-8, with 62 knockouts. He retired after losing a ten round decision to Scott Walker in January 1995. He did not fight 1987-1993. Whatever Arguello’s inner demons were, I always believed and still do that taking his own life was not one of them. American involvement in Nicaragua ended when de facto Communism was abo9lished there, and with troubles in places like Iran, Iraq, Somalia, and Egypt these days, Arguello Sr., like Nicaragua, was a casualty of political disagreement and discontent in a civil war long forgotten to all but Arguello Jr. All I can say about Arguello Sr. is treasure the memory.
Perhaps one day Arguello Jr. will learn the truth about who killed his father and why. Speculation is difficult without the facts. Until then, the government investigation of Arguello Sr.’s death will remain as fact, and the lost souls of Alexis Arguello Sr. and Alexis Arguello Jr. will sadly never rest, whatever that means.
