Philadephia, PA( January 30th, 2013)–Teon Kennedy began his career unbeaten in 18 professional bouts, a winner of four consecutive United States Boxing Association title bouts. Kennedy scored a tenth round TKO at 1:52 over Francisco Rodriguez in November 2010, then watched the fall unconscious in the ring at the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. Rodriguez eventually died. By the time Kennedy had won a 12 round decision over 15-0 Jorge Diaz in March 2011, he was well on his way to a world title opportunity. Kennedy then began a downward slide, unable to win a bout in past two years.

Kennedy relinquished his USBA title to fight for the interim North American Boxing Association Bantamweight title, losing a 12 round decision to Alexandro Lopez in August 2011 at Bally’s in Atlantic City. Kennedy drew with Christopher Martin at Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Las Vegas over 10 rounds in January 2012.

Finally, Teon was stopped in the fifth round of a World Boxing Association world title bout against unbeaten Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba at Grand Garden Arena, MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas in June 2012, a bout in which Kennedy was knocked down five times: in the first, fourth, and fifth rounds; and twice in the second round. Like Mike Dallas against Lucas Matthysse, Kennedy was not right for this bout for many reasons.

The principal reason Kennedy was not ready for this bout was because he had been unable to win either of his previous two fights against main event opposition. Teon,

I hope, will try again in the future. He will require training and style adjustments. As Sugar Ray Robinson and Ray Mancini will both attest to, you are never the same fighter if you kill a man in the ring. It is not every day of the week a fighter loses his killer instinct after something like this happens, humanity sings in, and he cannot regain your ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Perhaps, if Kennedy gets some more reasonable matchups in the future, he will have a better chance to work himself back into title contention, an older, wiser, more experienced fighter.

Teon Kennedy can work himself back to contender status. In the precarious bantamweight division, some things take time. Teon Kennedy will be back in 2013. Hopefully, when he returns, he will be a better fighter inside and out on the rough comeback road ahead.
