Upset of the Month! Middleweight Marcus Upshaw Kayos Turkish Prospect Oener

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

The probable upset of the month last weekend took place at Mana Studios in Miami, Florida. Mostly forgotten middleweight Marcus Upshaw, who has fought as an ‘opponent’ in recent years and won only two of his last 10 bouts, scored an upset. Upshaw, 18-14-4 with nine knockouts, Jacksonville, Florida, knocked out unbeaten Turkish middleweight prospect Bugra Oemer of Adana, Turkey in the sixth round of a scheduled ten rounder.

Upshaw won the interim World Boxing Council Mediterranean Super Middleweight title.

Of the eight unbeaten fighters fought by Upshaw during his boxing career, Oener was only the second unbeaten fighter Upshaw had beaten. Upshaw has been in some of the best fighters out there, including David Lemieux, Marco Antonio Rubio, Edwin Rodriguez and and Tarvis Simms. Given the chance to prepare in a full six to eight week training camp, Upshaw did what he was supposed to, and shined when he was expected to lose instead.

In the strange world of boxing, any time two boxers step inside the ring, anything can happen. An experienced boxer will always have a puncher’s chance. Then too, in boxing and in life, one’s opponent must never be underestimated. Upshaw was underestimated, and a big win for him was due. All things considered, it happened. Upshaw, 35 years old, debuted in May 2005 with a second round stoppage of Casey Davis, in Orlando, Florida.
