Say A Prayer For Hard Hittin’ Chris Henry, Another Promising Boxer’s Life Lost
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
The boxing community has lost one of its own in tragic circumstances. Hard Hittin’ Chris Henry, the Houston, Texas light heavyweight boxing contender best known for his knockout wins over Hugo Hernan Garay, Yusaf Mack, Rubin Williams, Derric James and others, was fatally shot this past weekend in a Houston apartment complex.
Henry compiled a record of 26-2 with 20 knockouts between 2005 and 2012. Henry was scheduled to fight a comeback bout this year against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, the 2012 Olympic Games Bronze medalist and light heavyweight prospect from Ukraine. In his passing, Henry’s end paralleled such boxers as Duane Thomas, Julius Letterlough and Hector Macho Camacho who met similar fatally tragic ends when the best years of life was still ahead of them.
Chris Henry was only 34 years old. He never realized a world title, and problems with the law derailed his world title aspirations. He was trying to put his life together when the end came. Say a prayer for Chris Henry, another promising boxer’s life taken away, another promising champion who never was. Chris Henry died nearly seven years to the day junior middleweight Omar Henry of Houston passed away at age 25 of sudden health problems.
