Canelo Might Fight 25-0 Saunders Instead of GGG Rematch
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
San Diego, Ca(May 31st, 2018)– Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is seriously considering a fight against 25-0 World Boxing Organization World Middleweight champion Billy Jo Saunders instead of a rematch with World Middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin at 160 pounds. Money seems to be the major point. Canelo wants 65 percent of the purse, while GGG in insisting on a 50/50 split of the purse.
Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez, who promotes Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, spoke with Saunders promoter Frank Warren. “Canelo is willing to fight him (Saunders), no problem,” Gomez stated to Boxing News “He has no problem fighting Saunders. We can (agree to the) fight. He (Canelo) can (also) fight Danny Jacobs. There’s (also) a number of other guys out there Canelo can fight (so) we are talking to other promoters. There’s Danny Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders, Jermall Charlo, Gary O’Sullivan and even David Lemieux (is possible).”
Alvarez is suspended until August 17, 2018, by the Nevada Athletic Commission, after testing positive in two tests for the banned substance Clenbuterol. Meanwhile, Saunders will defend his WBO world title next against fellow British fighter Martin Murray. Alvarez, 49-1-2 with 32 knockouts, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Golovkin, 38-0-1 with 32 knockouts, Los Angeles, California, remain among boxing’s top box office money draws.
Alvarez, who has also spoke about the possibility of fighting former world middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs next. What it all means is Canelo will dance to whatever opponent he can get who will enable him to squeeze the most money out of the bout-at the expense of the fighter who agrees to fight him at purse disadvantage. GGG is 36 years old, and Canelo may be stalling in order to allow GGG to lose his edge due to advancing age. By the time Manny Pacquiao actually fought Floyd Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao’s skills were not what they once were in the years the public waited to get his bout with Floyd. Canelo may be playing a waiting game with GGG, knowing youth and strength are on his side. GGG will need a better opponent to defend his world middleweight title belts than the inactive junior middleweight Vanos Martirosyan, who GGG knocked out in his last bout, a less than two round farce. If Canelo takes on Jaime Munguia, the new World Junior Middleweight champion from Tijuana, Mexico, the result would be an epic battle, with one fighter sure to get knocked out. Canelo is dancing the Mexican Hat Dance before selecting his next opponent, seeking to find the biggest pay-per-view paycheck available. Who could blame him? Canelo is a monster box office draw, and people pay to the dollar to see him.
