Fight Night! Tito Serrano vs. Iceman Hawkins WBA Do or Die Fillmore Card Preview
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Philadelphia, PA (March 28, 2018)– It’s do or die for the welterweight career of Philadelphia’s Raymond ‘Tito’ Serrano, 24-2, with 10 knockouts, when he takes on rising 12-0 prospect Malik ‘Iceman’ Hawkins of Baltimore, Maryland. Serrano will try to take Hawkins deep, who has never been tested nor been past the seventh round, in the 10 round main event at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening, March 30, 2018, for the vacant WBA-NABA USA welterweight title. Hawkins has another 10 rounder scheduled for June 29, 2018, and looking past Serrano might be an overconfident fatal mistake.
Hawkins’ last three opponents have a combined 65 wins, and winning records, including his second-round stoppage of 13-0-2 Carlos Soto of Mexico last year. However, the rest of Hawkins’ opponents have losing records. Serrano’s four losses were to opponents with a combined record of 77-1-1. By world class experience, Serrano has the edge.
Serrano should win a 10 round decision in a highly technical fight. If not, Hawkins figures to win by stoppage within the first seven rounds if he can figure Serrano out and break down inside. If the bout goes deep, Serrano has the advantage of ring generalship and experience behind his jab combinations to outpoint Hawkins on the cards. Serrano has boxed eight rounds or more nine times, and will probably try to take Hawkins into the twilight zone of the later rounds where he has never been.
Other Predictions
Lennox Allen Win 8 Josue Obando, Light Heavyweights
20-0-1 Jamaican southpaw Lennox Allen makes his first appearance in 29 months against Mexico’s dangerous Josue Obando, who won a six round split decision upset over 14-0 Jorge Garcia in Sinaloa, Mexico, in his last bout. Allen had better be careful how he boxes.
Ronald Ellis Win 6 Taneal Goyco, Super Middleweights
14-0-2 super middleweight prospect Ronald Ellis, coming off a 10 round draw in a USBA b out with Junior Younan, has another dangerous opponent in Philadelphia spoiler Taneal Goyco, who has ruined the careers of the majority of main event fighter she has fought in his last ten bouts. The short six round duration of this bout might give the 6’1” Goyco the inclination to live dangerously and try to take the shorter Ellis out by going after him inside. Goyco has beaten Jerry Odom, Dennis Hasson, Devin Butcher, Jeremy Russell and Frankie Filippone, and Dennis Morris, among others, and has beaten a number of unbeaten records. 9-10-1 Goyco has nothing to lose, which makes this bout interesting.
Jeremy Cuevas Win 6 Efrain ‘Macho’ Cruz, Super Lightweights
7-0 Phiadelphia super lightweight southpaw Jeremy Cuevas could have trouble with Vieques, Puerto Rico trialhorse Macho Cruz, whose 4-4-1 record is receiving, and who has gone six rounds a number of times.
Darmani Rock KO 4 Ronny Hill, Heavyweights
10-0 Philadelphia heavyweight prospect Darmani Rock better watch out as 4-11 Ronny Hill of Austin, Texas, has four first-round knockouts in his four wins. Rock should win, though.
Gadwin Rosa TKO 5 Jesus Lule, Super Featherweights
5-0 Puerto Rican super featherweight prospect Gadwin Rosa should stop clever 11-24-1 Florida journeyman Lule, whose inconsistent record somehow shows nine decision wins.
Joey Alday Jr. TKO 4 Michael Crain, Middleweights
Texas middleweight prospect Alday is 6-0 with six knockouts, which spells trouble for 1-1 Crain, who lacks the experience to defeat Alday, no matter the quality of Alday opponents.
Josue Rosa Jr. (Pro Debut) Win 4 Steven Lopez, Flyweights
Rosa should decision 0-2 Lopez in a rare battle of Philadelphia flyweights.
14-0 Connecticut super bantamweight prospect Tramaine Williams, 8-1 Philadelphia lightweight prospect Branden Pizarro, 1-0 Philadelphia bantamweight Romuel Cruz, and 12-2-1 Philadelphia super lightweight Samuel Teah are also scheduled to appear on the card, and should win their respective bouts if opponents have been found for them.
