Frampton Comes Alive! Carl Frampton Split Decisions Scott Quigg to Unify WBA and IBF Super Bantam Titles
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Manchester, UK (February 28th, 2016)– In the main event of a ten bout championship card with five title bouts on the line, British boxing fans did not rejoice when Scott Quigg lost a controversial 12 round split decision last night, February 27, 2016, at Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom, enabling Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton to retain his International Boxing Federation World Super Bantamweight title, and add Quigg’s World Boxing Association World Super Bantamweight title to his waist. It was only the third time in British boxing history an all-British title unification bout took place. Frampton was however the clear points winner of the bout. On hometown turf, it was Quigg’s fight to lose. Quigg started slow, and gave away too many rounds to be able to climb back late in the bout, short of a knockout.
Frampton, 22-0 with 14 knockouts, Belfast, Northern Ireland, waged a one punch at a time tactical battle, winning rounds two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and twelve to ice the win. After seven rounds, the fight was not of interest. Sensing impending defeat, Quigg began unloading in round eight, making the bout interesting and putting Frampton in trouble, but not enough to finish him. Quigg suffered a broken jaw in the fourth round, perhaps affecting his plan of attack in the bout early on.
How one judge, Levi Martinez, saw it for Quigg, and grave Quigg the final round which Frampton won, added to the controversy. Quigg asked for a rematch. Frampton is more likely to fight the winner of Guillermo Rigondeaux, the WBO Super Bantamweight champion, versus British champion James ‘Jazza’ Dickens coming in on March 12.
