REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent

Welcome back for another weekly edition of the Real Combat Media Boxing Weekly Report “Split Decision”!  It’s fight week people!!!!  Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs Andre Berto, PBC on Spike TV bouts featuring Errol “Da Truth” Spence vs Chris Van Heerden and Adonis “Superman” Stevenson vs Tommy “Kryptonite” Karpency will all take place this weekend.  Plus we hit you with the “Word iz” segment and more news and notes on what’s going on in the boxing world.  Let’s go!!!

Money May is looking to make history this weekend.  Mayweather (48-0 26 KOs) is looking to tie Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0 as he takes on former two time world champion Andre Berto (30-3 23 KOs).   The fight will take place Saturday September 12th at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV on Showtime PPV.  I’m here in Vegas to cover the fight and events live all week so you can follow me on Twitter @Zomanystylez or check out our instagram (Realcombatmedia).  #MayweatherBerto

Most people are disappointed with the selection of Berto but I beg to differ.  Berto is a two time world champion that always bring excitement and heart into every bout that he is in.  He has speed, quickness, and power in both hands.  Berto is no punk by a long shot.  He is very athletic as well.  For years people have criticized Mayweather for his selection of fights which is straight up bs.  He has taken on the biggest draws in boxing in Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto and most recently Manny Pacquiao, all of whom defeated easily.  It doesn’t matter who Mayweather decides to face at this point.  He has given us 16 plus years and has remained undefeated.  He has beaten every fighter that was put in front of him and at this point there is not much of an option left.  One of the biggest criticisms is that Floyd hasn’t fought a slick African American in his prime….well here we have Berto.  He is a young, prime, and athletic black fighter and a damn good one too!  This is more than likely Floyd’s last fight.  He has EARNED the right to select whoever he feels at this point.  What more does he have to prove?  Not going up in weight classes that he has no business fighting at will prove anything, especially if he defeats that opponent as well.  Next thing you know he will be asked to fight Andre Ward or Deontay Wilder or someone…lol.  Let’s appreciate what he has done for boxing because years from now we will look back and truly see what he has done with total admiration.

The undercard of Mayweather vs Berto is really good.  Let’s break it down fight by fight.

Badou “The Ripper” Jack vs George Groves.  This is for Jack’s WBC Super Middleweight Title.  TMT’s (The Money Team) Jack (19-1 12 KOs) is coming off maybe his best performance against Anthony Dirrell last April in Chicago.  Jack boxed beautifully that night in taking the belt from Dirrell scoring a huge upset and becoming the WBC Super Middleweight Champion.  George Groves (21-2 16 KOs) is looking to take the belt from Jack.  Groves is 2-0 in his last two fights since dropping back to back losses to Carl Froch, the only man to defeat Groves.

Roman Martinez vs Orlando Salido.  This is probably the most anticipated fight on the card that night.  If you remember the first fight between these two back in April you will understand why.  WBO Super Featherweight Champion Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) went to war with Salido (42-13-2, 17 KOs) in an all out slug-fest which ended in a unanimous decision victory for Martinez.  In their first fight Martinez dropped Salido twice and Salido was also deducted a point for a low blow.  Without the knockdowns and the point deduction Salido would’ve won the fight.  Martinez struggled with Salido’s pressure that night.  This fight may steal the show Saturday night.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs Johnathan Oquendo.  Former three time world champion Gonzalez (58-9, 49 KOs) will be entering the ring on Saturday night in another “Mexico vs Puerto Rico” battle as he takes on  (25-4, 16 KOs).  Gonzalez is now hunting for a title in the Super Featherweight Division.  This is going to be a great fight.  Mexico vs Puerto Rico has a long history between them and has produced many wars in the ring.  This fight will be no different.

PBC returns on Friday night September 11th on Spike TV.  The main event features Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (26-1, 21 KOs) vs Tommy “Kryptonite” Karpency (25-4-1, 14 KOs).   Stevenson, one of the hardest punchers in boxing,  is coming into the bout on a 13 fight win streak in which 11 were by stoppage.  They share common opponents in past fights, Chad Dawson and Andrzej Fonfara.  Stevenson stopped Dawson in 76 seconds and defeated Fonfara by unanimous decision.  Karpency defeated Dawson by split decision and was stopped in seven rounds by Fonfara.  Both fighters are southpaws.

In the co main event of the PBC on Spike TV card Errol “Da Truth” Spence Jr (17-0, 14 KOs) takes on South African Chris van Heerden (23-1-1, 12 KOs).  Spence is very deserving of his name, “Da Truth”.  The southpaw from Texas is the most talented fighter at 147 behind Mayweather and is widely regarded to be the heir of the throne once Money retires.  Van Heerden is also a southpaw who only defeat coming by split decision to Nikola Stevanovic.

Austin Trout scores sixth round KO over Joey Hernandez.  “No Doubt” Trout looked sensational in his knockout victory over Hernandez on Premiere Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes’.  In the fourth round Hernandez was deducted a point for body slamming Trout to the canvas.  Trout finished the fight with a fury of punches that sent Hernandez down in the sixth.

In another PBC on CBS event Anthony Dirrell dominates Marcos Antonio Rubio.  Dirrell coming off of his lost to Badou Jack in which he lost his title needed this victory over Rubio to get another title shot in Super Middleweight Division.  Dirrell right hand was on full display that night.  Rubio began to clench a lot as Dirrell’s punches became too much.  Dirrell won by a wide unanimous decision in a shut-out performance.

Jamie McDonnell defeated Tomoki Karmeda by unanimous decision.  On Sunday, McDonnell, who is rated No. 4 by THE RING at 118 pounds, defeated Tomoki Kameda by unanimous decision for the second time in just over four months. The scores were 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112; tallies which suggested a dominant performance.

Word IS….

Timothy Bradley vs Brandon Rios is OFFICIAL!!!!  Bradley vs Rios is finally made!  Bradley has made more noise in the news lately with his split from his long time trainer Joel Diaz.  I don’t know if this may be bad timing or if Bradley has things in place that no one knows about, but going into a fight with a banger like Rios he better be prepared.  This is an excellent matchup.  I hope Bradley don’t try to slug and bang in this bout because Rios style is tailored for that.  Rios looked great in his last bout against Mike Alavrado.  It will be interesting to see who is going to be in Bradley’s corner that night.  Rios is trained by one of the best trainers in the game today in Robert Garcia.  Can’t wait to see this one!

Lamont Peterson and Andre Dirrell return to the ring.  Former world champion Peterson (33-3-1 17 KOs) is set to take on undefeated Olympic Gold Medalist Felix Diaz Jr. (17-0 8 KOs) Saturday Ocotober 17th on Premiere Boxing Champions on NBC.

The televised co-main event begins at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT and pits Olympic Bronze medalist Andre “The Resurrected” Dirrell (24-2, 16 KOs) against Australia’s Blake “Il Capo” Caparello (21-1-1, 6 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

Guillermo Rigondeaux may be signing with Al Haymon as soon as next week!

Manny Pacquiao gets buckets!!!!  Pacquiao scored 19 points including 5 triples in a pre-season basketball game held General Santos City over the weekend.  That salt water I tell ya….lol.  Good to see Pacquiao displaying his athletic abilities.  Hope to see him back in the ring soon.

Amir Khan vs Ruslan Provodnikov is rumored to be on and poppin’ on Showtime this winter.  Khan needs a big name fighter and this would be an interesting matchup.  Provodnikov has problems with boxers with good footwork and Khan has problems with bit punchers!  Why isn’t Khan being rumored to be fighting Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter? Let’s see what happens!
