REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent
Chicago, IL (June 8th, 2015)– Welcome to my first weekly edition of “Split Decision ” which is Edition of the Real Combat Media Boxing Weekly Report. This will feature random news, notes, and fights from the previous week in boxing. This week will feature a recap of fights from Miguel Cotto vs Daniel Geale to upcoming events and fights featuring Erislandy Lara on the PBC on Spike TV Friday night and Saturday’s Showtime card featuring Deontay Wilder’s first title defense.
Miguel Cotto dismantled Daniel Geale with a 4th round TKO! Cotto looked quite impressive in his third showing under trainer Freddie Roach. He has now improved to 3-0 (3 KOs) under Roach. There was so much discussion of the catchweight of 157lb leading up to the Middleweight fight, however Geale rehydrated to an unofficial weight of 182lbs the night of the fight. Geale had the weight advantage on fight-night but that didn’t matter. Cotto’s left hook was on and poppin all night long!!! His footwork looked great as well. After the second knock down of the fight in the fourth round Geale decided to call it a night.
After the fight Cotto acknowleged that Canelo Alvarez is next. Both Cotto and Alvarez made bold statements in their fights leading up to their potential matchup in the near future. That will be a great matchup when the fight takes place. We will get into that at another time! Gennady Golovkin was ringside for the Cotto-Geale fight Saturday night. Is it me or did Jim Lampley mention GGG so much during the telecast of the fight that you might have actually thought that he was also in the ring with Cotto and Geale!
PBC delivers again with Robert Guerrero and Aaron Martinez. Earlier rounds produced toe to toe action with Guerrero and Martinez both fighting on the inside. Coming into this fight many expected Guerrero to walk through Martinez but Martinez had different plans. Although Martinez has only produced 4 KOs’ in his career, he dropped Guerrero in the 4th round with a vicious right hand as he had Guerrero trapped against the ropes. Guerrero looked out on his feet so I was surprised that he got up and continued fighting. Guerrero eventually adjusted and begin to box more from the outside as he squeeked out a split decision victory with scores of 95-94, 95-94, and 97-92. That last score of 97-92 was nuts!!!
Speaking of scores, it seems every week there is that one judge that just can’t get right! Last week it the judge in the Khan vs. Algeri fight that had it 117-111 for Khan and this week we had a judge score it 97-92 for Guerrero. I though CJ Ross was in the building when I heard 97-92. I personally scored the bout 95-94 for Guerrero although it could’ve gone either way.
Featherweight contender Jesus Cuellar took on Vic Darchinyan. Cuellar came out fast as usual against the veteran Darchinyan but found it difficult to land power punches early in the fight. Darchinyan used good movement to momentarily neutralize Cuellar’s aggression while setting traps and catching the younger opponent with some good shots. However
Cuellar’s pressure proved to be too much for Darchinyan. Cuellar wore down the veteran by rounds 6 and 7. The show came to an end in the 8th when Cuellar landed a big overhand left, dropping Darchinyan. Although Darchinyan made it to his feet and the ref continued the fight, his corner threw in the towel to bring the bout to a halt. Initially the ref didn’t see the towel or his corner trying the stop the bout. Darchinyan might want to retire at this point. He has fought everyone that he could without ducking or avoiding any fighter!
Oscar De La Hoya is rumored to be looking to get back in the squared circle! In a recent interview with Fighthype.com De La Hoya had this to say, “Every day when I wake up, I think about returning to fight again, every day because boxing is my passion and my love. But I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about it so I’m not saying yes and I’m not saying no…I’m going to train a lil bit and see what happens…I really have a desire to come back.” In another video I seen of Oscar on TMZ.com, he said, “If I ever come back, and I think about it every day, I’ll fight Triple G!” Good to see he still has a great sense of humor!
Jessie Vargas has a new trainer, as Erik Morales will replace Roy Jones Jr. Vargas gears up for his June 27 HBO main event against Timothy Bradley Jr. According to ESPN.com reports that the switch comes because Jones was about to miss two weeks of camp, and has been available “only sporadically,” sort of forcing Vargas to make a change. Roy Jones Jr. also has come out and said, “He had issues with me traveling…I told him he could come to Pensacola or I thought it would be best that he get somebody else because I was moving so much…he got Erik Morales, which I thing will do a good job for him” . Morales has worked some as a trainer in Mexico, but not on a high level. He will be Vargas’ fifth trainer in seven years.
Victor Ortiz was in the news this week. Ortiz believes the world wants to see a rematch with Mayweather. Hmmmmm….enough said!
PBC is back in Chicago on Spike TV. Friday June 12th Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara(20-2-2, 12 KOs) returns to action as he takes on veteran Delvin Rodriguez(28-7-4, 16 KOs) for the WBA Light Middleweight. Rodriguez is coming off a draw against Joachim Alcine last May and Lara is coming in having won three of his last four fights, which includes a December victory over Ishe Smith. Also on the card you will see Russian knockout artist Artur Beterbiev (8-0, 8 KOs) vs the ring-savvy Doudou Ngumbu (34-6, 13 KOs) of Haute-Garonne, France.
Showtime presents…Saturday June 13th Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs)is slated to make the first defense of his title when he faces battle-tested veteran Eric “Drummer Boy” Molina(23-2, 17 KOs). For Wilder, the Tuscaloosa, AL. native, this will be his first fight since his unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne in January in Las Vegas. He has fully recovered from a fractured right hand suffered in that fight.Molina, 33, is ranked No. 9 in the WBC rankings. He held the WBC U.S. heavyweight title before losing it to Chris Arreola in a first-round knockout in February of 2012. This fight will take place in at the Bartow Arena in downtown Birmingham, AL.
Rumored upcoming fights…..Paulie Malignaggi vs Danny Garcia has been floating around for an August showdown. Kell Brook vs Brandon Rios has been said to take place in August as well. Besides there is already a glovegate scandal going on between Brook and Rios even before the fight is finalized. Floyd Mayweather vs Amir Khan and everybody and their momma not named Klitschko for a September bout. This is all just words floating in the air and none have been set in stone yet.
