Drama! Drama! Drama! On Twitter between “Vicious” Vivian Harris & Paulie Malignaggi.
By Pattee Mak, Real Combat Media New England Boxing Correspondent
I’m sure some of you have seen the back and forth tweets about “Vicious” Vivian Harris (32-10-2, 19 Ko’s) from Brooklyn, New York calling out Paulie Malignaggi (33-6-0) also from Brooklyn. I had to learn more about the tweets on social media. So let’s get right to the questions:
Pattee Mak: On twitter you tweeted, “So how can @PaulMalignaggi say you’re one of the best in the world when you’re not the best in #Brooklyn”.Would you, Harris, say you are the best in Brooklyn?
Harris: No I’m not saying I’m the best but there are a lot of 147 in Brooklyn. Until you fight and win then you become the best. So he can’t say he’s the best 147 in Brooklyn.
Pattee Mak: Malignaggi had a scheduled bout against Danny O’Connor (26-2-0) on May 29, 2015 but due to an injury the bout was canceled. You fought O’Connor and won by split decision against him back on 10-12-2013. Two judges scored it in favour of you 99-91; 94-96 and 100-90 for O’Connor. Were the judges watching two separate fights??? Malignaggi never fought O’Connor before. Now you feel as if you should be given the opportunity for a matchup between you and Paulie. Why is this?
Harris: Because I beat Danny and when I beat him I then had to go to Mexico to fight Jorge Paez Jr (37-3-1) in Mexico. I had to travel all over the world to get a fight and he’s saying he’s the best 147 pounder but he won’t fight me but he’ll go fight someone outside of Brooklyn. When we first started all of this it wasn’t on twitter, it was an instragram. Peter said “Don’t be calling Paulie out. We got made love for you”. I’m saying, It’s not about that. That’s how it all started between Paulie and I.
Pattee Mak: On twitter you tweeted: “Yo@PaulMalignaggi just tell the fans why you wanted to box oconnor ? When you could have me! I beat him on 2 weeks notice no training”. What’s your thoughts on why O’Connor and not you?
Harris: Because he knows we had past issues before in sparring. Every time he sees me he brings up the past sparring event. So that’s why he choose to fight someone that I beat. He’s a straight forward fighter. I fight both ways, it makes it difficult for him. So he’ll choose Danny O’Connor and not me.
Pattee Mak: Any other reasons why Paulie won’t fight you?
Harris: That’s why he won’t fight. I’m a boxer and puncher and I stopped him more than once in the gym. He knows what I’m going to do to him. Styles makes fights. He can’t outbox me. He doesn’t want to take that chance. He’s in a better position than me right now. If he loses why take that chance against me. At the end of the day just be humble about it. Just remember where we all came from. We all came from Gleason’s Gym. He’s thinking he’s the best out there. I don’t take anyone likely. I train for my fights.
Pattee Mak: Tell me about that day in sparring where you stopped Paulie.
Harris: I stopped him twice. I had a scheduled fight with Johnson. I beat him with one hand. I hurt my right hand while sparring with this other kid and with Paulie. I fought the fight with one hand. Every time I jabbed and go to the body I was stopping him with one hand. So when I went into this fight I was going to the body, doing the same body shots that I was practicing with Paulie and the other sparring partner. Paulie is trying to lie and say I didn’t stop him in the gym. But don’t walk around the gym and think you are better than nobody cause you are not.
Pattee Mak: How has Paulie been responding to your tweets?
Harris:He’s responding by telling me it’s a level. Is he saying he’s on a different level them me? Everyone has to wait to wait their turn. Everyone wants to be like Floyd. He’s paid his dues. Paulie hasn’t beat anyone that Floyd beat. Paulie got knocked out his last fight[by Shawn Porter (23-0-1) on 4-19-2014 by TKO at 1:14 in round 4 of 12].
Pattee Mak: You also mentioned that the fights you lost too you took at the wrong weight or on two weeks notice. If you knew you wouldn’t be ready, why take the fight and were regarding all your 10 losses?
Harris: The fight I went up in weight and lost I had full time to train for those fights. I don’t have a promoter so when these fights come my way I have to take it. I need to stay active. I have a family to take care of. I need to stay active. It is what I have to do. I have to keep myself in shape and that’s what I have to do for the last four fights.
Pattee Mak: I know you would love to fight Paulie, but if all the cards don’t land the way they do, what’s next for you?
Harris: I’m keeping myself in shape I’m hoping I get called for any fights. I’ll go anywhere to fight. I’m keeping myself in shape. I know I can become champ at 147. No one will tell me I can’t.
Pattee Mak: What else would you like to add or to say to Paulie?
Harris: Definitely just man up. Let the fans and Brooklyn see the fight. If I’m lying who has the better jab or the better punch to the body let’s see. Cause I’ve stopped him twice in Gleason’s Gym. Styles makes fights.
Pattee Mak: Some people on twitter are saying you got this fight and some are saying Paulie will take this fight. Predictions are only predictions, what are your predictions in this bout if it comes together?
Harris: I’m going to KO Paulie out and stop him. I’m a better boxer than Pauliecause I did it before with 16 ounces. I just like my facebook but I got the twitter stuff and Paulie likes to talk a lot of crap. He tries to act like a tuff guy. At the end of the day he’s looking to cash in. He knows what time it is. Before I lose a fight, he’s going to win the fight. I’m not going to fight someone to lose a fight. Paulie doesn’t want to lose a fight.
Pattee Mak: So what’s up with all the trash talking on social media? Do you just not like each other or is it just a boxing thing?
Harris: It’s a boxing thing. Like I said, we were friends before. I’m not feeling him and the crew and a lot of people in Brooklyn aren’t either. Fighters they grow up with show love all the time bro. I don’t need no love. I’m good.
Pattee Mak: Any last words?
Harris: Yes thank you for this interview. I’d like to give a shout out to Brooklyn! Flatbush! Gleason’s Gym never change. Brooklyn for life! Gleason’s Gym all day! No Hollywood just straight hood!
