Iron Man Manager Trainer Barry Stumpf Interview: Rolando Chinea Will Pressure Osnel Charles

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

In a Real Combat Media interview exclusive, noted manager and trainer Barry Stumpf of Finefrock & Stumpf’s Lancaster Golden Gloves Center predicted his unbeaten lightweight prospect Rolando Chinea would defeat veteran Osnel Charles in his six round bout at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Wyomissing on an Andre Acuna Lionheart Boxing card this Friday night, July 25, 2014. Stumpf, a 39 year training veteran of the boxing scene, has had six fighters killed in the Lancaster area in his long career. Rolando Chinea, a Lancaster survivor, has seen his boxing career flourish under Stumpf’s guidance and tutelage.

Barry Stumpf: “We have to beat him! (Osnel Charles). We didn’t want a 1-1 fighter (wanted a good fight for Chinea).”

Real Combat Media: “What kind of a fighter were you looking for Rolando Chinea?”

Barry Stumpf: “Charles is an experienced 10-9-1 fighter who can teach Rolando things. Rolando had a broken jaw in one fight, Rolando never quit-and fought six minutes with a broken jaw. Rolando has such a will to win. His defense is phenomenal, and he has such a desire to win. Rolando loves the sport of boxing.”

Real Combat Media: “How did Rolando Chinea get discovered?”

Real Combat Media: “Our promoter is Chris Mittendorf. He’s working with Mike Tyson now, and he has ties with Terence Crawford. Chris match makes all over the world, so I knew he could move me (this fighter). He asked me down to Baltimore, where he had Emmanuel Taylor in the gym. Rolando had on regular sneakers for a six round gym fight. We put so much pressure on Taylor and we did very well with Taylor. After the fifth round they stopped it, Taylor was bleeding. This amateur just walkedin off the street and put so much pressure on him, it was a wakeup call for Taylor (who just won a big fight over Karim Mayfield). Taylor and I are very close. Mittendorf signed Chinea after his first few pro fights.”

Real Combat Media: “What makes Rolando Chinea different from other fighters?”

Barry Stumpf: “Rolando doesn’t have any tattoos, he has no alcohol problem, no drug problem, no criminal history, just a desire to fight. His biggest problem in Lancaster going to school was fighting because people wanted to fight. Rolando could fight. He just had no defense. He was 5-13 as an amateur when I got him, (then) he was 35-17 with me, and avenged every loss he had in the amateurs except for one.”

Real Combat Media: “How will the fight develop, in your view, between Chinea and Charles?”

Barry Stumpf: “If things go our way, it came down to (the fact) I couldn’t have this kid train for three months without a fight. We wanted 135 pounds, we settled on 137 pounds. That shows me that guy (Osnel Charles) is not ready for this fight. Rolando is on weight at 135 pounds. Now, I can put a little more food on him now, he will be a little stronger. I just think it (the weight issue) will benefit us, Rolando being stronger. I make sure he eats (right).”

Real Combat Media:Osnel Charles has a lot of lightweight division experience, 101 pro rounds boxed to Chinea’s 31 pro rounds boxed.”

Barry Stumpf: “I take this guy (Osnel Charles) with a lot of respect. Nobody can take this fight this quick-on three days notice-and be prepared for us.”

Real Combat Media: “Will it be a competitive matchup and an exciting fight?”

Barry Stumpf: “Yes, I think it is going to be a very exciting fight. Exciting because Rolando knows if he beats Charles, he climbs up in the ratings.”

Real Combat Media: “This is a six rounder. When will you move up to eight rounds?”

Barry Stumpf: “We will move him up to eight rounds by November, hopefully. Our goal is to bring Rolando to 12-0 by the end of the year.”

Real Combat Media: “Do you think Osnel Charles will go for broke and try to test Chinea right away?”

Barry Stumpf: “I think Charles is gonna come in and try to end it quick, he doesn’t have any conditioning. You cannot be prepared for Rolando Chinea in three days or two days, it cannot work that way. I think he (Charles) is coming right at us. The longer this fight goes, the more it works to his disadvantage.Osnel Charles is going to fight one of the best conditioned athletes he’s every fought.”

Real Combat Media: “Barry, what sets Rolando Chinea as a fighter apart from the other fighters you can trained?”

Barry Stumpf: “I’ve trained a lot of athletes. Chinea is not the most skilled, but he has the most dedication and desire to win, a special desire to win. He believes in himself and can back it up, one of the top two boxers I have trained in 39 years. Chinea has no other goals other than being a world champion. He’s in the gym seven days a week. I see this kid more than I seemyold lady!”
