Promoter Dmitriy Salita Brings New York City Boxing Into The New Millennium
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent- Ringside
New York, NY (March 1st, 2014)– Welterweight boxer and boxing promoter Dmitriy Salita and his Star of David Promotions hosted an exciting five bout card at The Millennium Theater in Brighton Beach Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday evening, February 27, 2014. The title of the venue suits Salita well, as he is signing fighters and bringing a new generation of boxers into the new millennium. As a boxing promoter, Salita is on the rise.
For the first time in two decades, the New York State Athletic Commission proceeded with an event in New York City without the presence of the highly respected Chief Inspector Felix Figueroa (1952-2014), who sadly passed away on Valentine’s Day, just two days after working his last boxing card at Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan. The traditional ten count ringing of the bell remembering Felix Figueroa and his legacy was tolled, with ring announcer David Diamante leading the boxing audience in attendance to rise for the traditional moment of silence in remembrance. His influence, guidance and presence will surely be missed, and he will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him.
In the main event, Albanian fighter Stivens ‘Superman’ Bujaj of New York Cityh scored a first round TKO over Elvin Sanchez to win the vacant New York State cruiserweight title. Bujaj, now 11-0 with eight knockouts, figured to have a tough time with Sanchez. However, overconfidence had set in, as Sanchez had upset 13-0-2 cruiserweight prospect Venroy July at the DC Armory in his last ring appearance by third round stoppage in February 2013. A year’s inactivity made any aggressive attempt by Sanchez foolhardy, but nonetheless Sanchez charged Bujaj from the opening bell and tried to take him out.
Bujaj is a heavy handed power hitter, and landed some serious power head shots halfway through round two which dropped Sanchez to the canvas in a corner with a bloody nose. Sanchez beat the count, but his legs were gone, and Bujaj rained in head and power shots on a defenseless Sanchez leaning on the ropers, who was by that point unable to move or escape after Bujaj cut off the ring, causing referee Steve Willis to stop the brief bout at 2:22 of the first round. Real Combat Media complimented NYSAC Deputy Commissioner Robert Orlando upon conclusion of this title bout, as the NYSAC had found a worthy state cruiserweight champion. Sanchez, in essence, got cocky and fought the wrong fight. Inactivity and the wrong game plan doomed Sanchez from the start, who tried to go inside on Bujaj and, underestimating Stivens power, took a brief but horrific senseless beating.
