Camacho Jr.

Macho Time in Summer Zenith, Overweight Hector Camacho Jr. Wins

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (August 10th, 2013)– It’s still ‘macho time’ in the zenith, the upper region of the sky, the point of the celestial sphere directly above the observer. Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho may be gone, but his soul still looks down upon the world and permeates the boxing ring he possessed for so long. The ghost of Hector Camacho’s memory is undoubtedly not too happy with his son’s latest win, an eight round unanimous decision over Lee Murtagh at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York, on August 8, 2013.

Southpaw Hector Camacho Jr. has now defeated Murtagh, Miguel Angel Munguia (TKO5) and Arsenio Terrazas (KO 4) in his last three bouts, fought since his father’s death in November 2012. The last remnants of ‘macho time’ may be on a time clock rapidly running out of steam. Success is motivation. There remained big questions when Camacho Jr. weighed in 169 3/4 pounds while his opponent was 157 1/2 pounds. The only saving grace Camacho Jr. had was Murtagh was also over the agreed 157 pounds contracted weight, but there’s a difference between being a half pound overweight, and 10 3/4 pounds overweight.

Nearing age 35, at 57-5-1 with 31 knockouts, Machito’s enthusiasm is not of the world class caliber, class or nature. Floyd Mayweather Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Guty Espadas Jr. are sibling successes. For others like Pipino Cuevas Jr., Camacho Jr., Greg Coverson Jr., Dario Victor Galindez, Marcos Geraldo Jr., and Buster Mathis Jr., the road was not a kind one. For rising possible stars like Carlos Zarate Jr., Chris Eubank Jr., Jorge Paez Jr. and George Foreman Jr., the verdict remains undecided. In trying to emulate and imitate his father, Machito Camacho has the additional emotional burden of having to cope with and think about the aftermath of his legendary father’s death.

The best suggestion is for Hector Camacho Jr. to throw in the towel and hang it up before he gets hurt. At one point, Machito had a potential fight of the table with Dmitriy Salita at 154 pounds, but Camacho Jr. can no longer make light middleweight. Machito will not now conquer the world in the 175 pound light heavyweight division, and it is doubtful Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud and others will take Machito’s latest win seriously.
