Judah versus Magic Man Malignaggi Callout adds to Brooklyn Salita vs Bracero Hijinks

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

With the new opening of the Barclays Arena, Dmitry Salita and Gabriel Tito Bracero have been welterweight calling each other out like mad for about a year for Lou DiBella to promote their proposed all-Brooklyn war. Now Zab Judah has proposed yet another all-Brooklyn war, this time Zab versus Paulie Malignaggi. Both matchups will sell tickets, but do not require plane tickets.

The Judah versus Maliganggi welterweight ten round idea as some sort of world title eliminator could become reality on December 7, 2013, at Barclays Arena if Golden Boy Promotions makes it happen. The card main event might be IBF World Welterweight champion Devon Alexander versus Amir Khan, at Barclays, Dubai or maybe elsewhere.

Judah, now 42-8 with 29 kayos, is a southpaw approaching 36 years old now fighting at 140 pounds, and like Floyd Mayweather Jr., could be nearing the end of his controversial career. A bout with Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi, 32-5 with seven knockouts, 32 years old, would not be a walk in the park with Zab. Paulie proved against Adrien Broner he is a stay busy fighter, and looked busy enough to win seven rounds out of twelve against Broner on the Real Combat Media scorecard to keep his WBA World Welterweight title, though he lost the split decision on the cards.

Zab’s problem is twofold. Paulie will want Zab to come up in weight from 140 to 147 pounds, where Zab is less effective. Then too, Paulie throws far more punches by the punch count against Zab, and thus is likely to win on the cards if Zab cannot stop him in the later rounds. The bout promises to be exciting in what may be Zab Judah’s last major bout.

Whether the winner of Judah versus Malignaggi gets a shot at Danny Garcia, another shot at Broner or Floyd again, or whoever, remains to be seen. Malignaggi versus Judah us sure to be a super way of selling tickets in Brooklyn. If Golden Boy and Lou DiBella could cooperate to add Salita versus Bracero to the same card to create a developing mega card, it would be fantastic. My response is Brooklyn has the venue, Richard Schaeffer should somehow find a way at Golden Boy to make it happen. However, Judah versus Malignaggi, and Salita versus Bracero would not have the same punch outside of Brooklyn on a Golden Boy card, the major factor to be considered with these two potential all-Brooklyn bouts. Zab should be credited with one superb achievement: he is great at noisy self-promotion.
