Cindy Checkmate Serrano Back in Action Against Garcia. Smirnova Next?
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
In a six round bout scheduled to take place in the Dominican Republic on Saturday, August 31, 2013, which does not appear on BoxRec, Cindy ‘Checkmate’ Serrano, the BoxRec number eight world ranked featherweight, 19-5, nine knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, will face Diana ‘La Evangelica’ Garcia, 12-17, three knockouts, Dominican Republic.
Cindy Serrano won the vacant WIBA Women’s International Lightweight title in August 2012 by decisioning Kerri Hill, but the title subsequently went vacant again and was won in July 2013 by undefeated Russian Natalia Smirnova, now fighting out of Hamburg, Germany. Cindy has won in the United States, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, but has not won in Europe, where she has lost in Sweden and in France. Cindy Serrano versus Smirnova is a somewhat possibility, as is a bout between Cindy and WIBA Women’s Lightweight World champion Lucia Morelli, an Italian fighting out of Germany.
Serrano hit a raw streak between 2007 and 2012, going 0-5-1 and not winning a single decision in any of the six bouts she fought. If Cindy beats Garcia, she will have won her fifth consecutive bout in a year, a great comeback. Watching Cindy and her younger boxing sister Amanda fight can be hard to watch, not because of their boxing talent or fighting in rough boxing exchanges, but because Cindy and Amanda are both beautiful women. Look aside, I wish promoters today would have more of an interest in female boxers, but still you rarely see women boxers on major fight cards. Hopefully one day that will change. Women buy tickets and watch sports just as men do, promoters need to make a decent effort to attract the female boxing fans as well as the male boxing fans by giving female athletes more television opportunities to gain international exposure.
