King David Estrada Wins Cicero Comeback But Questions Remain

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

Chicago,IL (April 27th, 2013)–Former welterweight contender David Estrada of Chicago, attempting a comeback after more than two years of inactivity, won a decent but uninspiring six round decision over opponent Rahman Musatafa Yusubovo at Cicero Stadium, in Chicago, Illinois, on a five bout card promoted by Sammy Merza’s SMP Promotions, on Friday evening, April 26, 2013.

Despite a BoxRec notation to the contrary, Estrada did not win the Universal Boxing Federation All-Americas Junior Middleweight championship, as that bout had been sanctioned for a different opponent who dropped out. Yusubov was a late substitute opponent, and by virtue of his losing record, did not qualify for a belt sanction, according to Pennsylvania matchmaker and UBF United States representative Mike Melendez.

Estrada, 34, now 26-6, 16 knockouts, won by scores of 60-54, 59-55, and 59-55. On the plus side, Estrada did get in some badly needed rounds of work in his first ring appearance since he knocked out Franklin Gonzalez in December 2010, and he appeared to win every round. Yusubov, 29, now 9-11, seven knockouts, an Azerbaijani fighting out of Dallas, Texas, to his credit came in condition and tried to win, actually winning one round on two judges scorecards, and remaining in the house throughout the contest. Ring rust may have contributed to Estrada’s decision to take the easier win by decision while boxing with a grain of cautiousness.

However, serious questions remain regarding Estrada’s latest comeback attempt. Yusubov came into the bout against Estrada a loser of nine of his previous ten bouts, and had been stopped six times, though he had gone the six round distance with 29-01 George Tahdooahnippah and 15-0 Abraham Han. 41 year old Mexican fighter Elco Garcia had stopped Yusubov in seven rounds this past January, and 6-1 Thomas Folowo stopped Yusubov in four rounds last July 2012. A better result was expected from the power punching Estrada, who was unable to get Yusubov, a limited fighter, out after a few rounds gone, in his once feared power shot style.

In Chicago undercard bouts, Ahmed El Mousaoui of France, in his debut on American soil,  decisioned experienced and seasoned Ghana veteran Ben Ankrah of Ghana in the eight round light middleweight main event. Light welterweight David Diaz stopped Jim Sharp in the second round. 3-4 middleweight Anthony Linenfelser got knocked out in the first round by debuting Kelin Sharp.  3-0 Jose Arambula won a four round decision over journeyman Greg Coverson Jr., the son of former super featherweight and lightweight contender Greg ‘Candy Man’ Coverson, who fought between 1976 and 1983. The older Coverson’s record at one point reached 32-0, and his only losses were ten round decisions to famous world champion Hector Macho Camacho and 1976 Lightweight Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis Jr.. Coverson Jr., a 33 year old southpaw, has a record of 3-6, has lost five in a row, and should hang the gloves up before he further disgraces his father’s boxing memory.
