Walter 2 Guns Wright To Fight Peter Manfredo Jr.
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Middleweight Walter ‘2 Guns’ Wright, best known for his appearance in season two of ESPN’s boxing television reality show ‘The Contender’, who was scheduled to comeback in a bout with the late Omar Henry in June 2013, will instead fight Peter Manfredo Jr. at 167 pounds in the ten round main event on only two weeks notice. Wright is taking the place of the injured Joey Spina in a ten round Super Middleweight bout to be held at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island, on Friday evening, March 15, 2013.
Wright, 32, of Seattle, Washington, 14-3 with seven knockouts between 2003 and 2010, has a deceiving ring record by virtue of his sparring resume. Wright and Manfredo are the same age and have only a one inch height differential. The matchup promises to be an exciting fight. Inactive since 2010, Wright scored a six round decision win over Joshua Snyder in his last ring appearance in June 2010.
Walter 2 Guns Wright’s resume is a dangerous one. Promoter Jimmy Burchfield Sr. is taking a big chance by putting Manfredo in with Wright, and for good reason. Wright has served as the principal sparring partner for James Kirkland in preparation for Kirkland’s bouts with Carlos Molina and Alfredo Angulo, and is still in top form. As for last minute opponents, Wright versus Manfredo is a lot like Evgeny Gradovich, who took an IBF World Featherweight championship bout on several weeks notice, and just dethroned champion Billy Dib by split decision in 12.
Manfredo, ‘The Pride of Providence’, Providence, Rhode Island, is currently ranked # 15 by BoxRec, and has a career record of 38-7 with 20 knockouts. Manfredo is coming off a fifth round stoppage loss to 43-0-1 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in November 2011, and a ten round decision win over veteran Rayco Saunders in November 2012.
