Carl Froch V Mikkel Kessler rematch looking likely

By: Callum Meads
Hull, UK (January 3rd 2013) – It now appears that the International Boxing Federation (IBF) will allow Carl Froch to bypass his mandatory challenger in order to pursue a unification rematch with WBA champion Mikkel Kessler. Froch was originally obligated to face Canadian southpaw Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16KO), who was and still is the mandatory challenger for The Cobra’s IBF World Championship. Negotiations regarding the rematch with Mikkel Kessler have been on-going, with Eddie Hearn seeking a summer date in Manchester, England. The unification fight is one of the biggest fights to be made in boxing and should rightfully prioritise over a mandatory defence of the title.
The first clash between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch saw the Viking Warrior emerge victorious from the tight contest with a unanimous decision. Although the judge’s scores appeared to be clear cut, the decision was contested by a lot of boxing fans. The fight of the year contender saw both fighters control periods of the fight, with Kessler appearing to have the upper hand in power. Froch responded to everything Kessler threw at him, constantly exchanging power punches with the hard hitting Dane. Froch was more active for large periods of the fight, which made the decision almost impossible to call. I myself scored the fight a draw and have been clamouring for the rematch ever since the final bell of the first fight.
Just like Derry Matthews v Anthony Crolla II, and Rios v Alvarado II, this fight makes sense. Both of these fighters are looking for a rematch with undefeated Ring Champion Andre Ward, what better way to settle it than in the ring. Froch done his part in travelling to Denmark, and now it appears as if Kessler will need to do his part and travel to England. A lot of fans believe Froch has improved since the first clash, and with Kessler coming off three vicious KO victories, we could be looking at a truly great fight.
