Is Tito Bracero Next For Danny Garcia after Judah?

By: Robert Brizel

Brooklyn, NY (December 6, 2012)–On the undercard of a seven bout card at Roseland Ballroom in New York City this past October, light welterweight contender Gabriel ‘Tito’ Bracero of Brooklyn won an eight round unanimous decision over Erick ‘La Maquina’ Cruz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bracero, 20-1, 3 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York,  landed straight jabs and left hooks to the head off the jab to win the bout on points, but lacked a serious power punch and was not able to stop Cruz, a limited fighter.

Trainer Tommy Gallagher, commenting on Bracero’s next move, issued a direct challenge to the camp of  WBA light welterweight super champion and WBC champion Danny Garcia of Philadelphia as he exited the ring at ringside.

“We (the Gabriel Bracero camp) want Danny Garcia! We want him now!”

Bracero lost a ten round decision to former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus ‘Chop-Chop’ Corley in January 2012 after being dropped several times, though Bracero came on strongly the last few rounds. In his next bout with Jermaine White in June 2012, three accidental head butts turned Bracero’s face into a bloody mess, and he took many stitches, requiring several months of no sparring recovery time to heal his facial wounds.

WBA World Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi, interviewed at ringside during Bracero’s last bout, explained the mindset of a fighter returning to the ring after being badly cut during a bout. “You wonder how the scar is going to hold up. You want to know if you can fight your fight without doubting yourself. I takes a lot of concentration. It’s very important for a fighter like Gabriel Bracero, coming off a bad stitch cut, to have the right cut man in his corner. A cut man can win or lose a fight sometimes. Tito Bracero is a world class contender. He’s there. He’s ready for a world championship title fight right now. Could Bracero fight me or Danny Garcia in the near future? It’s just a matter of Tito agreeing to the right fight.”

With Floyd Mayweather holding world titles at 147 pounds and 154 pounds, and planning mega bouts with Roberto Guerrero and Canelo Alvarez next in Las Vegas in 2013, Danny Garcia will have to be content to defend his World Boxing Council and Light Welterweight and World Boxing Association Super Light Welterweight titles against Zab Judah at the Barclay’s Center in February 2013, and hope for the opportunity to move up from 140 to 147 pounds for the opportunity to fight Floyd Mayweather in 2014, if Garcia, now 25-0, 16 knockouts, keeps winning. If Zab Judah upsets Garcia, it could force a match between Judah and Tito Bracero.

Mayweather plans to have Alvarez defend his WBC light middleweight title as the preliminary bout to the main event (which is his next bout) so as have Alvarez in line to fight the winner of Mayweather’s bout which followed. If Alvarez fights WBA light middleweight champion Austin Trout (coming off a title defense win against Miguel Cotto) and Trout wins, the apple cart would be upset and force Floyd to fight Trout.

Bracero could be and in all likelihood will be next for Danny Garcia of Philadelphia if he gets past Judah, which could prove difficult if Zab trains for Garcia to win). The temptation for Garcia to fight his second fighter in a row in the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn should prove too tempting, as Bracero, like Zab Judah, could pack the house and sell every ticket, and also do outstanding in dollar signs in the pay-per-view, and provide excellent paydays again without the promoter having to pay for fly-ins. Bracero, who lacks a power punch when he is not doing additional power training with power training specialist John Schaeffer of Pennsylvania, is a candidate to be stopped on cuts by Garcia unless he picks his game up one notch, which will be up to trainer Tommy Gallagher to see he does in his next fight.

Bracero returns on December 19, 2012, and will seek his third win in a row in a scheduled eight rounder against journeyman Johnnie Edwards of North Carolina, 15-5-1, 8 knockouts, in the preliminary bout to the main event of DiBella Entertainment’s 10 bout card  at Roseland Ballroom in New   York City. Light heavyweights Will Rosinsky and Otis Griffin will fight a ten rounder in the main event.
