New York, NY (December 6th, 2012)–Sergio Gabriel Martinez may be universally recognized as the Middleweight champion of the world, but for much of his career, a mysterious man with sunglasses indoors has been at his side. The mystery man, Gabriel ‘Cyclops’ Sarmiento, acquired a reputation rapidly as one of the finest boxing trainers in the world. With the death of Emmanuel Steward, Sarmiento may now be the best, even better than Freddie Roach. However, Sarmiento has a predicament no other trainer has ever faced.
Sarmiento was arrested by Interpol via the United States Marshal Service on March 4, 2011, and taken to Los Angeles, on a warrant for aggravated battery in Spain, and extradicted back to Spain. His brother, Pablo Sarmiento, then took over the full-time training duties for working with Martinez leading into his title defense at Foxwoods casino over Sergiy Dzinziruk. Gabriel was wanted by Interpol Madrid, Interpol Washington, and the Office of International Affairs.

Gabriel Sarmiento went back in his native Spain. His legal problems were resolved, and he has remained in Spain training boxers. Gabriel Sarmiento was back in the corner of Sergio Gabriel Martinez as chief second during Martinez’ title defense win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. It seems almost certain he will be back in the corner of Sergio Gabriel Martinez taking care of business for the upcoming bout with Matthew Macklin in Argentina in April 2013. Martinez is returning to his native Argentina to fight for the first time since he won a ten round decision over Francisco Antonio Mora in February 2002.
As to whether Gabriel Sarmiento gets a new visa to come back to the United States as a trainer in the future for professional boxing bouts, that’s anybody’s guess, including Interpol. Gabriel Sarmiento remains one of Boxing’s best, most colorful, and most mysterious professional trainers today.
