On Camaraderie at Ringside and in Life

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York,NY (December, 13th, 2012)– It was nice to see every star from Billy Joel to Bruce Springsteen to The Who get together in the Concert For Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden. The spirit of friendship, fellowship and camaraderie in New York   City was at its best on 12.12.12.

Just a short piece to respond to those boxing journalists, boxing organizations and boxing sites who do not know how to share or care or have feelings for other people. One reason why we have a boxing press, why we share boxing links and sports links, why we share contacts, why we maintain friendships at ringside, is because boxing, like any other sport or group of people, functions largely due to a fine camaraderie.

Early in my boxing writing career, I met some writers and photographers and corner people and officials filled with hate, but most of the time I met writers and photographers and corner people and officials filled with love and caring for others.

The good has always overpowered the negative influences. Most importantly, I have seen promoters, managers, officials, referees, writers, photographers, corner people, former fighters, and common people with tremendous compassion for the fight game and just plain people. These days every boxing event always supports a great charity, be it Ring 8 or Ring 10, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York, autism societies, stem cell research, and so on…….there are so many charities supported by boxers and people at ringside nowadays I am very proud to be there.

In each and every one of our daily lives, we strive to set an example to make the world a little bit better place than when we came. We always want to learn from others. I am proud to say as a sportswriter and photojournalist, I have grown greatly as a person at ringside and continue to do so by the many fine people I continue to meet there. By no means am I perfect, none of us are. We learn and grow. People may criticize boxing and the contact sports, but I feel life is what you make of it. If people knew more about boxing, they would see how much amateur and professional boxing has done for troubled youth, given them a purpose, hope and direction, and solid mentoring for the future, in a multicultural rainbow world.

Not every one wins a championship-but at ringside-where I have acquired much character-the special brotherhood of my many diverse friends continues to influence my thinking and character for the better, with many lessons learned. People sincerely care about others. Never has the issue of boxing safety been overlooked. My friends at ringside are all champions in my book. Not just in boxing, but in life, the spirit of camaraderie is an essence of Role Modeling for the generation of today, and the generation which follows. For it is not just boxing, but it is the people of the sport and their character which makes it what is today. As the Concert For Sandy Relief reminds us, there’s still a lot of great people out there, and as Louis Satchmo Armstrong still sings ‘What A Wonderful World’, our forever reminder that ours is a life worth living to the fullest every day.
