Featherweight quarter final tournament

Cody “Bam Bam” Bollinger (13-3) vs Shahbulat “Sha” Shamhalaev (10-1-1)

Round 1

Match starts with Bollinger throwing a right low groin kick on Shamhalaev.  He recovers quickly and steps back in to the fight.  Shamhalaev catches a Bollinger front kick and gets him on his back quickly.  Bollinger takes a hard body shot from the standing Russian.  He begins to work his rubber guard as Shamhalaev agrees to come to the ground.  He attacks a Gogo Plata but is unsuccessful.  Shamhalaev throws some descent but sporadic ground and pound as Cody maintains his active guard work.  Shamhalaev hits Cody with a hard body shot.  Cody simply balls up, after over a minute of destructive ground and pound the referee steps in and ends the fight for a Shamhalaev TKO with only 11 seconds remaining in the round.  When he sits up, a deep gash is present just above the right eye of Cody Bollinger.

Nayeb Hezam (13-12) vs Magomedrasul Khasbulaev (17-5)

Round 1

Nayeb Hezam comes in aggressive with combinational punches.  Out of nowhere, Khasbulaev throws a counter right hand off a leg kick and drops Nayeb.  The punch is right on the chin and Kasbulaev follows up with some downward punches to his fallen foe just before the fight is stopped at only 24 seconds into the first round by TKO.

Middleweight bout

Simon Marini (9-5) vs Ali “The Monster” Mokdad (6-2)

Round 1

Both men meet in the center of the cage throwing with conviction.  After less than 30 seconds of hard exchanges Marini drops Mokdad with a straight right hand.  He follows up with some ground and pound but Mokdad is able to protect himself enough to get back up to his feet.  After a quick clinch, they separate and meet again in the center of the cage.  Marini seems to be getting the better of the exchanges with Mokdad favoring kicks over punches.  Mokdad is able to land a few punches and jumps into the clinch where he is able to secure several knees to the midsection before getting hit with a counter right hand on the separation.  Marini ends the round with an explosive double leg takedown to secure the first round on the score cards.

Round 2

Half way through the round and neither fighter is able to secure the upper hand.  They are standing toe to toe in the center of the ring exchanging back and forth.  Many combinations are landing but neither man looks worse for wear.  Both of their conditioning is superb as neither man seems to be slowing down.  All takedown attempts are shrugged off by both fighters and the entire round is decided on the feet.  It was a very close round that could have gone either way.

Round 3

Again, squared off in the center of the cage, both men give no ground.  They start with a plethora of kick exchanges to start the final round.  Mokdad is still favoring kicks throwing push kicks, leg kicks and head kicks while Marini favors power punching and low kicks for his set up.  Amazingly, both fighter’s cardio and stamina is still running at a high level and they are continuing to move more like lightweight fighters than middleweights.  Toward the final minute, Mokdad stuffs Marini’s double leg and starts to pour on the punches.  He is able to get blood to start running down Marini’s face as he pressures him toward the cage taking center ring.  Another shot by Marini is defended and the fighters throw leather non-stop until the final bell.  Mokdad swayed the tide in his favor in the final round pressuring with forward motion and kick and punching combinations.

29-28 on all judges’ score cards, Unanimous decision for Mokdad

Featherweight quarter final tournament

Jeremy Spoon (12-2) vs Mike Richman (13-1)

Round 1

After a quick feeling out with the hands, some ranging and respect, Richman drops Spoon with a head kick.  The left kick bounces right off of the top of Spoons head and he drops.  Only 23 seconds before “Big” John stops the fight, Richman gets a couple of quick punces in before he does.

Richman by KO at 23 seconds of the first round

Featherweight quarter final tournament

Wagnney Fabiano (15-3) vs Akop Stepanyan (12-4)

Akop takes center cage and seems to be the confident aggressor.  Fabiano looks a little nervous, circling the outside of the cage and moving to his left, incorrectly against his right handed opponent.  He rushes for the double and is able to fight his way to a trip that lands him in side mount.  Stepanyan escapes but after a scramble, is on his back again.  Fabiano smashes Akop with top game pressure and is able to pass from half guard to full mount.  Once there, Akop incorrectly pushes and bridges to escape the bottom postion and the multi-time BJJ world champion transitions to an armbar.  Stepanyan tries to escape but after over 10 seconds of extrutiation pressure on the elbow, Akop finally taps out at 3:24.

Fabiano by Armbar submission at 3:24 of the first round

Featherweight quarter final tournament

Nazareno “El Tigre” Malegarie (22-3) vs Rad Martinez (13-2)

Malegarie is moving quickly, circling on the outside against the slower and more composed Martinez.  Less than two minutes in and Malagarie is flowing blood from the nose coming from a counter punch of Martinez.  Malegarie is the busier fighter however Martinez seems to be the more precise and is the clearly more powerful striker.  No takedowns are really attempted as both fighters, both excellent BJJ practitioners, are more than happy to validate their superiority on the feet.  Martinez is landing some hard shots and Malegarie is on the move.  He is now pouring blood from his nose and mouth.  Martinez is able to secure the takedown to “ice” the round just as the bell sounds.

Round 2

Martinez starts with the stronger kick and punch combinations forcing Malegarie to attempt the takedown.  Against the cage fence, Martinez is able to defend the attempt and moves away, circling back to center ring.  Two minutes in and Malegarie works Martinez against the cage, trying to force the takedown with everything that he has.  Martinez is able to push and scramble his way back to his feet before Malegarie is able to secure a dominant position.  Then, Malegarie defends a strong Martinez takedown.  This is a real brawl and both men are game to fight in the pocket.  The round ends with each man head to head at center cage.

Round 3

30 seconds of exchanging at center cage and Rad Martinez gets the double leg takedown.  Just as quickly, Malegarie executes a beautiful hip bump sweep from his guard, Martinez scrambles and gets back to his feet and we’re a minute through the final round.  With a minute and a half left in the round, Rad Martinez lands several hard lefts in a row which back Malegarie up but do not seem to affect his legs.  Martinez continues to pressure Nazarreno, even through a good 1-2 combination, just before Malegarie slips and jumps right back up to his feet.  With only seconds left, Martinez is once again able to secure the takedown and top position against the cage until the final bell rings.

Martinez by Unanimous decision

Main Event

Patricky Pitbull Freire (10-4) vs Eddie Alvarez (24-3)

Round 1

Almost a minute into the fight and both fighters are still in the feeling out process.  Out of nowhere, Eddie drops Pitbull with a left hand after a missed lead right.  Pitbull hits the canvas but immediately jumps back to his feet and clubs Alvarez with a huge overhand right.  Eddie is on the run and Patricky gives chase as he lands several more shots before Alvarez is able to slow the pace with a clinch against the cage.  The men dance across the mat, in the clinch and out, until they re-establish themselves in the clinch against the cage on the far side.  Alvarez has Pitbull against the cage and throws a few knees to the thigh before Patricky is able to get back to the middle of the circled square.  On separation, you can see Alvarez is cut over his left eye.  Right for right, both men land blazing fast right straight right hands to the face.  They clearly give each other respect with their confident facial expressions.  With less than a minute the pace slows as they faint back and forth, waiting patiently for the other fighter to make a mistake.  With less than 15 seconds in the match, Alvarez lands a monster right round kick to the face as Patricky walks backward into the fence.  He follows it up with punches but Pitbull is completely unconscious.  Alvarez jumps over the cage and runs out into the stands with his wife and adoring fans.  What an awesome performance.

Eddie Alvarez by KO at 4:54 of round 1
