Prichard Colon Dies at 33, Eleven Years After Ring Tragedy

Boston, Mass (August 13th, 2026)– In a Facebook announcement in Spanish by his father, Prichard Colon, it has been revealed that former welterweight contender Prichard Colon has passed away at age 33, eleven years after his ring tragedy.
“Good morning, my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son, Prichard Colon, from this earthly world. He is now in a better place. I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream of taking him on vacation to Puerto Rico, as he so deeply wanted to go there, but it could not be done. Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”
On October 17, 2015, Colon’s corner began cutting his gloves off by mistake before the tenth and final round of his NBC-televised bout with Terrel Williams, and he was disqualified. Subsequently, in his dressing room, Colon was rushed to nearby Inova Fairfax Hospital due to vomiting, fainting and dizzy spells in his dressing room. Williams led 88-81 and 85-84 on two scorecards, while Colon led 85-84 on the third scorecard with the bout still on the table going into the final round.
Williams had been penalized one point for landing a right hand to the back of Colon’s head in the seventh round. Colon complained of being repeatedly hit behind the head. Referee Joe Cooper penalized Colon two points for a deliberate low blow in the fifth round. Williams knocked down Colon twice in the ninth round. Where the bout would have gone at this point, and who would have emerged victorious, remains the unanswered question. There were, from a neutral standpoint, penalized fouls on both sides. Blows to the back of the head, which are illegal, could have contributed to Colon’s collapsed state in his dressing room subsequently after the bout was over.
Since his collapse did not occur in the ring, and was well after the bout was over, conclusions could only be speculative at that point. Colon (16-1, 13 KOs), Maitland, Florida, was a top Premier Boxing Champions prospect when he was matched with the then-unbeaten Terrel Williams, whose career went nowhere after the unfortunate bout ending.
