Camden, NJ (July 28th, 2025)– The Camden Buzzsaw, former World Light Heavyweight and World Cruiserweight champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi, passed away this past weekend on July 25, 2025, at the age of 72. His sister, Wanda King, confirmed Qawi had been suffering from Dementia for the past five years, related to his boxing career.
Between 1978 and 1998, the two-decade pro boxing career of Qawi saw him win the World Boxing Council World Light Heavyweight and World Boxing Association World Cruiserweight titles. Qawi was stopped twice, by George Foreman and Evander Holyfield (in a rematch). Despite having challenger Michael Spinks down in round eight, Qawi lost his WBC title by a 15-round decision. Michael Spinks was never beaten in the light heavyweight division. Qawi would go on to stop Michael’s brother Leon Spinks, a former world heavyweight champion, at cruiserweight.
Qawi came out of the Rahway State Prison boxing program after having served five years for armed robbery. Going 1-1-1 in his first three bouts, he went on to defeat Matthew Saad Muhammad twice in WBC world title bouts. Qawi was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004. His nemesis, Big George Foreman, passed away at age 75 in March of 2025 earlier this year. When in good health, Qawi worked at the Lighthouse, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Mays Landing, New Jersey, working with both adults and adolescent youth as a patient counselor and advocate.
