Tanzanian Lightweight Hassan Mgaya Dies After Fifth Round Knockout

In the final boxing tragedy of 2024, Tanzanian lightweight prospect Hassan Mgaya has died from his injuries on December 30, 2024, after getting knocked out in the fifth round of a bout against opponent Paul Elias at Dunia Ngogo Hall, Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania on December 27, 2024.

Mgaya, 3-4-2 with one knockout, Das-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, wound up in critical condition after the knockout by Paul Elias, 4-2 with four knockouts, Das-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. According to Cosmas Cheka, Treasurer of the Tanzanian Boxers Association, Mgaya sustained severe head punches, leading to his eventual ring collapse and biting his tongue, which then sank into his throat.

All first aid protocols were in place and followed ringside. Mgaya received first aid in ring at the scene. His health subsequently deteriorated. He was first taken to Palestina Hospital in Sinza, then transferred to Mwananyamala Hospital where his condition worsened. He was subsequently referred to a third hospital, Muhimbili National Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Nsajigwa Mwangamilo, Acting Secretary General of the Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC), confirmed the passing of Mgaya, whose burial took place on January 1, 2025, in Vingunguti Cemetery in Dar-Es-Salaam.
