Bruecker vs. DeMoor Misfits Boxing is a Danger to the Sport
Editorial By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
On Saturday, November 19, 2022, on the Misfits 3 boxing card at Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, the cruiserweight pro boxing bout between 2-0 MMA fighter Josh Bruecker of Detroit, Michigan, and debuting ex-college football player and reality TV star James DeMoor almost ended in tragedy. Watch the video accompanying this editorial, and you will see DeMoor, despite having size advantage over Brueckner, was breathing heavily only halfway through the first round, and a prime candidate for a televised DAZN tragedy.
Misfits boxing, an offshoot of celebrity and reality TV boxing, is worse than the businessman’s boxing circuit because it matches noted names without demonstrated boxing skill. Using calculated rights to the body, and lefts to the head, the feigning and combination-minded Brueckner quickly took the life and steam out of DeMoor’s legs in the first round.
The second round was nothing more than the big man standing and holding on for dear life. With his legs gone, DeMoor was a stationary jolly green giant of a target, obviously not in proper condition, and not with the properly trained technique when his misses had him staggering around the ring. DeMoor gave up in his corner after the horrific second round.
By the time DeMoor reached his stool at the end of the second round, he was seeing three Brueckners instead of one with blurred vision. Referee Gregorio Alvarez saved the evening by maintaining control of the ring throughout, and frequently separating the combatants in what appeared to be the worst lopsided four-round bout of 2022. Misfits is a good term.
In the four-round main event, 2-0 heavyweight southpaw Greg Hardy of Sunrise, Florida, dropped Hasim Rahman Jr. in the third round, to win a four-round decision by scores of 39-36 across the board. The 12-2 Rahman, of Baltimore, Maryland, is obviously not of the same caliber as his ex-world heavyweight champion father, having lost back-to-back bouts to limited opposition. In April 2022, Rahman was stopped in the fifth round at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada, to James McKenzie Morrison, the son of the late Tommy ‘The Duke’ Morrison. Another pretender, Morrison lost his next bout by an eight-round decision to 12-3 Robert Simms. Children of ex-champions should not be dabbling in boxing beefing padded records when they cannot fight real opponents, it’s that simple.
