
Tragedy in Montreal! Teenage Boxer Jeanette Zapata in Coma After Canadian Bout

Mexican 2-4 welterweight Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, age 18, nicknamed “La Chitaboom”, of Villa de Puertecitos, Mexico, is in a coma in critical condition after going into seizures and collapsing in the corner, bring stretchered out after the completion of the fourth round, tow minute rounds in this Canadian female bout.
The tragedy occurred on a boxing card at Stade IGA, Montreal, Canada, after the end of the fourth round of a women’s welterweight scheduled six round bout between Zapata and top 20 ranked worldwide female welterweight Marie Pier Houle, now 4-0-1 with two knockouts, Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada, on Saturday, August 28, 2021.
Zapata remains in a coma at a nearby hospital. Houle released the following statement on her Facebook page after the tragedy “Yesterday’s events really upset me. Boxing carries a lot of risks and dangers. This is our job. Our Passion. Never, forever (was it my) intention to seriously hurt an opponent as part of my plans. My most sincere thoughts are with my opponent, Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, and her family (in Mexico). I wish, with all my heart, she gets well. I offer my thoughts and prayers to my opponent Jeannete Zacarias Zapata, and all (of) her family. Global News reported Régie des Alcools des Courses et des Jeux (RACJ), the Quebec regulatory body overseeing numerous industries including combat sports, will investigate the circumstances of the fight.
