Mar De La Plata, Argentina (July 1st, 2021)– Former World Boxing Association World Super Bantamweight champion Sergio Victor Palma has died at age 65 on June 28, 2021, in Mar De La Plata, Argentina, after a two week illness at Interzonal Hospital de Agudas in Mar De La Plata, according to his friends. Separately, news sources reported a cerebral vascular accident had left Palma with motor limitations.
Between 1976 and 1990, Palma compiled a ring record of 52-5-5 with 20 knockouts, winning the Argentine FAB Super Bantamweight title, and winning and defending the World Boxing Association World Super Bantamweight championship between 1980 and 1982. Palma fought only three times in the last seven years of his career, winning twice and drawing once.
After stopping ex-Olympian Leo Randolph in August 1980 to win the WBA super bantamweight title in his second attempt, Palma defended his title successfully against Ricardo Cardona, Jorge Lujan, Ulises Morales, and Vicit Muongroyet, Palma lost the title by 15 round decision to Leo Cruz in a rematch at the Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida. He never received another world title shot.
