Joe Joyce defeats Daniel Dubois

Jabbing Juggernaut Joe Joyce Makes One-Eyed Daniel Dubois Quit in Heavyweight Thriller

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

London, UK (November 29th, 2020)– In the main event of an eight bouts card at Church House, Westminster, London, United Kingdom, on Saturday, November 28, 2020, rising heavyweight contender Joe Joyce moved a step closer towards a world title bout with British compatriot Anthony Joshua with a tenth round knockout of Daniel Dubois, in a battle of unbeaten British heavyweight prospects.

Dubois, now 15-1 with 14 knockouts, Greenwich, London, United Kingdom, age 23, dominated the older Joyce early with thunderous power shots early. However, the taller Joyce, 12-0 with 11 knockouts, Putney, London, United Kingdom, the 2016 Olympic Super-Heavyweight Silver Medalist, used a technical jab attack, which consistently tagged the left eye of Dubois and eventually closed it. The bout appeared about even on the cards, power shot rounds versus jab rounds won.

The end came in the tenth round when a punch exchange between the two combatants definitely turned the tide of battle. Dubois got hit on the closed left eye, and then voluntarily took a knee and the ten count to save his vision. In pain, and blind in the left eye, in a situation similar to Iran Barkley’s loss to Roberto Duran. Barkley could not see out of the left eye in the eleventh round and went down. Dubois was unable to survive Joyce, who simply came forward and worked the jab patiently without ego and never panicked. Joyce came across as a sort of super heavyweight boxing technician version of Bob Foster, working the swollen eye like a cut patiently until his opponent gave up. A rematch would be a miserable excuse to sell tickets. Dubois has been exposed as a power puncher who cannot outwork a technical jabber who can take his best shots and not move.

Result: Joe Joyce KO 10 Daniel Dubois, Heavyweights (0:36)

Dubois took a knee after getting hit on left eye, which was swollen shut, and took the count.
