Jacobs Split Decisions Rosado in 12, Chavez Jr. Stops Minda
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Hollywood, FL (November 28th, 2020)– An out of shape former World Boxing Council World Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., fighting at light heavyweight, made a successful comeback and broke two bouts losing streak with a fourth-round stoppage of journeyman Jeyson ‘Verdugo’ Minda on Friday, November 27, 2020, at Parque Revolucion, Culican, Sinaloa, Mexico. Chavez, 56-5-1 with 24 knockouts, Culican, Sinaloa, Mexico, age 34, still had trouble in the first two rounds of his tuneup with the younger Minda, age 27, 14-3-1 with eight knockouts, Salem, Massachusetts, by way of Ecuador. Minda used a rapid left hook to land power shots to the right eye and nose of Chavez. Chavez countered with heavy body shots which dropped Minda in rounds two, three, and four, before Minda’s corner stopped the contest.
Result: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. TKO 4 JeysonMinda, Light Heavyweights
Referee: Sebastian Echegaray. Minda down in rounds two, three, four. Corner stoppage.
Elsewhere, Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs, the former International Boxing Federation World Middleweight champion, made a successful comeback at super middleweight, but only in terms of who scored the fight, escaping with a lucky 12 round split decision victory on Friday, November 27, 2020, at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, over a well-prepared Gabriel Rosado. Jacobs, 37-3 with 30 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, had no audience to watch him, and evidently did not think Rosado a serious enough of a threat coming in. Rosado, 25-13-1 with 14 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, went from contender to middleweight gatekeeper after getting stopped by Gennady GGG Golovkin in 2013. Rosado is 4-8-1 with one no-contest in his last 14 bouts, but his record is deceiving due to the high quality of opponent. Rosado felt he won the bout, as he was landing more than the ten punches a round Jacobs was averaging, and Rosado appeared to control the tempo of the close, hard-fought bout. Jacobs was not old, but he was looking clearly ring rusty. One negative effect of the coronavirus pandemic is inactivity and lack of inspiration are hurt even the best of the elite fighters, many of whom are struggling to stay in condition in a time period where bouts are scarce and boxing fans nonexistent. This bout made it clear Jacobs has no business at Super Middleweight and needs to return to middleweight. Jacobs had limited power, speed and his timing is not the same at 168 pounds. Never underestimate your opponent. An aging Jacobs got a gift.
Result: Daniel Jacobs Win Split Decision 12 Gabriel Rosado, Super Middleweights
Scoring: 115-113, 115-113 Jacobs. 115-113 Rosado. Referee: Samuel Burgos
