Leo Santa Cruz vs. Gervonta Davis

Leo Santa Cruz Calls Out Gervonta Davis

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Los Angeles, CA (April, 25th, 2020)– Both Leon Santa Cruz and Gervonta Davis have World Boxing Association championship pedigrees. Santa Cruz, 37-1-1 with 19 knockouts, Rosemead, California, by way of Huetamo, Mexico, the World Boxing Association Super World Super Featherweight champion and World Boxing Council Diamond World Featherweight champion, moved up in weight and captured the vacant World Boxing Association World Super Featherweight title of Gervonta Davis. For it seems Davis, 23-0 with 22 knockouts, Baltimore, Maryland, the World Boxing Association World Featherweight champion, moved up in weight and captured the vacant World Boxing Association World Lightweight title.

In the midst of the current pandemic, what matchup could be juicer for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center, Staples Center Los Angeles, Monte Carlo, in the tradition of Tommy Morrison versus Rocky Balboa, Tyson Fury versus anybody, or Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

Gervonta Davis versus Leo Santa Cruz is on the table. Most certainly this match, when it occurs later in 2020 (and it will occur) will be for the World Boxing Association Super World Super Featherweight title. Short of Canelo Alvarez, Santa Cruz versus Davis most certainly is the mega super fight of the lower weights, bigger than anything Errol Spence Jr., GGG or a Floyd comeback could generate at the box office and the DAZN pay-per-view at this point. This is a bout we would like to see in 2020 or 2021.

Leo Santa Cruz recently spoke with World Boxing Association (WBA) President, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, on Instagram Live, about his desire to face Gervonta Davis in a WBA super fight 12 round internationally televised brawl for it all. The bottom line is this is a spectacular matchup, for whatever 130 pounds or 135 pounds world title belts (or both, as was done with Floyd once) the WBA wants on the table to make it happen.

According to Santa Cruz, “We’re focused on the fight against Gervonta Davis. The negotiation was very advanced. (Unfortunately)with this (the coronavirus pandemic isolation mandate) situation it has slowed down (the final contractual negotiations). We thought it could be (Davis versus Santa Cruz for Santa Cruz’ WBA World Super Featherweight title scheduled) in May (2020) or June (2020). Now we are waiting for a new date (later in 2020 because of the unique isolation) circumstances.”. Make it happen, bro.
