By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
According to Brenda Spinks, wife of former World Heavyweight champion ‘Neon’ Leon Spinks, her husband, age 66, is current battling prostate cancer which has spread to his bladder. “It’s going to be a long road and a lot of work, but are bound and determined for the champ to make a comeback. Dear Friends. I know it’s been awhile. However, you know how I believe in the power of prayer. It’s been a tough year for us. Leon has endured a lot of medical problems. I’m reaching out to ask you to kindly pray for my Beautiful Husband Leon [so] he may overcome the obstacles that have crossed his path.”
Leon, who is a member of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, is best remembered for his upset victory over Muhammad Ali to win the world heavyweight title in 1978. Leon had a gap toothed smile at the time, which, after his face appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, made him memorable. Leon was discharged from a Las Vegas hospital on New Year’s Eve 2020 after a prolonged period of prostate treatment and is back at his home in Henderson, Nevada. Leon’s son Cory was a welterweight champion from 2003 to 2005. Another boxing son, light heavyweight Leon Calvin, was killed in a drive by shooting in 1990. Leon’s brother, Michael Spinks, won a share of the world heavyweight title from Larry Holmes and later lost it to Mike Tyson. In recent years, Leon has endured a number of health problems and surgeries.
