ANTHONY JOSHUA VS. ALEXANDER POVETKIN PREVIEW
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
London, UK (September 21, 2018)– Promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing will present an exciting card of seven professional bouts at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom on Saturday evening, September 22, 2018, televised on United Kingdom Sky Boxing Office.
Anthony Joshua will defend his IBF, IBO, WBO and WBA Super versions of the world heavyweight title against 39-year-old Alexander Povetkin. Joshua, 21-0, 20 knockouts, Watford, United Kingdom, is more than a decade younger, and will have height and reach advantage over Povetkin, 34-1 with 24 knockouts, Chekhov, Russian Federation. Povetkin, a former WBA World Heavyweight titleholder, currently holds WBA and WBO regional heavyweight titles.
Similar to Wladimir Klitschko against Joshua, Povetkin remains at the top of his game, yet he is now too old for Joshua or wBC champ Deontay Wilder, who are younger, faster and in their prime. Povetkin will endure several knockdowns and will get stopped within 11 rounds in a scenario similar to Klitschko’s loss to Joshua. Four years earlier, the bout would have beenen more interesting. Povetkin could drop Joshua, but cannot overpower him in a long contest. Still, Povetkin has nothing to lose, and Joshua had better be careful.
