Berchelt vs. Miura

By Victor O. Garcia- Ringside

Inglewood, Ca (July 15,2017)— Mexican champion Miguel Berchelt (32-1, 28 KOs) flourished against Japan’s Takashi Miura (31-4-2, 24 KOs) in a 12-round championship bout for Berchelt’s WBC Super Featherweight title. The judges scored the bout unanimously in favor of Berchelt. Scores were 116-111, 119-109, and 120-108.

Miguel Berchelt was the better fighter of the night. He showed a great display of boxing. He worked the ring well and did not allow the lethal left-hand of Miura to have much success in the fight.

“Berchelt was a smart fighter. He did not allow me to get my distance.” Said Miura after his loss to Miguel.

Berchelt outclassed the former champion. His jab was key in tonight’s victory, which kept Miura off balanced and incapable of landing the shots Miura was looking for. Miguel did take some great shots by the powerful Miura. Berchelt proved that he has a great chin and did not slow down from putting a beating on Miura.

After successfully beating Francisco Vargas in January and now Takashi Miura —two of the top guys of the 130 weight-limit division, Miguel was asked what is next for his career? And he responded:

“I knew this fight was going to be won with intelligence. Miura is a warrior, and fought till the end,” said Miguel Berchelt. “Miura has the toughest left hand in the division. He kept coming forward, and when he connected his punches they did hurt. I knew I was going to fight and ex-world champion, so I prepared myself well. I have proven that I am the best by taking on the two toughest champions in the division with Vargas and Miura. I am ready to fight anyone.”

Corrales vs Castellanos

In the co-feature fight of the night, Panamanian WBA Super Featherweight champion defeated Mexican veteran Robinson Castellanos via majority-decision, after the fight came to a stop due to an accidental head butt. The judges scored the bout 94-94, 94-93, and 96-92.

After earning a victory over Cuban fighter Yurokis Gamboa, back in May, Robinson Castellanos (24-13, 14 KOs)  got another title shot against the current WBA Super Featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales (22-1, 8 KOs). The first few rounds were in favor of the champion as he was outboxing Castellanos. It quickly changed when Robinson dropped Corrales twice in the fourth round. The momentum shifted in favor of Castellanos and the crowd began to go crazy for the Mexican fighter.

Towards the late rounds, the champion began to take control of the fight once again. Corrales used quick reflexes to make Robinson miss and would make him pay with well connected counters. The fight came to a stop in the tenth round when Jezreel accidentally head-butted Robinson under his right eye, which caused the fight to come to a stop and was later determined that the champion Jezreel Corrales successfully defended his title.

“I knew this would be an interesting fight, I am so happy about the victory,” said Jezreel Corrales. “This is probably the best fight that I’ve had in my career so far. I’m looking at tonight’s main event as one of my future opponents.”

“I am honestly so sad,” said Robinson Castellanos. “That head butt should have disqualified him; it could have been fatal. I knew coming in that I was in enemy territory, however I felt that I was ahead in the cards. I feel terrible.”

Smith Jr vs Barrera

The first televised bout on HBO Boxing After Dark, was a championship bout between WBC International light heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr. and Sullivan Barrera.

Although suffering a knockdown in the first round, Barrera put on a beating on Joe Smith Jr. Barrera showed great body work. His uppercuts were the most vicious. Barrera hit Smith from all angles. Joe smith Jr could not be counted out. Smith was able to hurt Barrera a few times. Most visible one was in the 4th round when Smith landed a clean right hook.

After 10 rounds of a good boxing clinic from Barrera, he became the new WBC International light heavyweight champion via unanimous-decision. The judges scored the bout 96-93, 97-92(2x). Sullivan Barrera improves his record to 20-1, 14 KOs).

“I feel very happy about this win, Joe Smith, Jr. is a great champion, and I respect him very much,” said Sullivan Barrera, “This title wouldn’t have been possible with my amazing team, and my father here tonight was also amazing. When Smith, Jr. knocked me down in the second round, I got back up cause that’s who I am. In my fight with Shabranskyy the same thing happened. I shoot back up to get the victory.” Said Sullivan Barrera.
