Cotto vs GGG?

Miguel Cotto hasn’t been in the ring since November of 2015 when he fought Saul Canelo Álvarez. Ever since then Cotto has had trouble finding someone to meet in the ring. Before the Canelo fight, Cotto was adamant of not fighting against Gennady Golovkin but now it may look like a possibility. Freddie Roach recently mentioned that a fight with Golovkin might be Cotto’s last.

“[Cotto] might have a big fight coming up because we’re talking him and GGG next. That’s a fight that I do not turn down. I like GGG. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a very good worker. He’s a hard fight for anybody, he’s a very, very big puncher. But I think he’s beatable and I think he was exposed a little bit in his last fight. We’re ready for that. It’s the last super-fight out there in the weight division and that’s who we want to fight in our last fight. We want to make history,” Roach told Boxing News.

Will Marquez Return?

It has been almost three years since Juan Manuel Marquez stepped into the ring. Marquez has pondered retirement but it looks like he won’t hang up the gloves until one last fight. There is very little information pertaining to his next fight but his trainer Nacho Beristain said they’re looking at June 24th against an unnamed opponent.

“That’s what they told me, June 24 in Toluca. Marquez tells me that there is nothing certain, but it is looking very good. We have corrected some things and we will try to do big things,” said Beristain to ESPN Deportes.

“Juan Manuel is a fighter who needs very little time to show his best, he’s been training. I left him a plan or work and now that I saw him I was simply pointing out some details, but he’s been doing very well, especially in the precision of his work.”

Who do you want Marquez to face for his last fight?

Joshua Ended Career of Former Opponent

In 2014 Anthony Joshua faced a boxer named Matt Legg on the undercard of the Froch vs Groves fight. The fight was over within 83 seconds of the fight. Legg not only lost the fight but also his ability to fight as well; after that fight Legg was forced to retire. Here is what Legg had to say about the fight:

“The last uppercut he hit me with broke my eye socket. It doesn’t look like a powerful punch but it knocked me off my feet.

“He broke my eye socket, I couldn’t see anything. I felt like blood was coming out of my eyes. It was the only time I’ve felt pain in a fight.

“My plan after was to go for the Southern Area title but because I had the broken eye socket it put me out for three whole months.

“I had nerve damage. The whole right side of my face was numb for three months.

“I had to get a job as a building site manager in Liverpool. I was desperate to fight again as anyone after Joshua would be easy.”

“I always said he would be heavyweight champion.

“I felt back then he was the new Mike Tyson. He has had 18 fights and 18 knockouts. He is exciting to watch.

“You know he won’t mess around and box for 12 rounds. He is going to try to take you out. If he catches you with a hard jab he will try to finish you.

“It was like facing Mike Tyson, that’s how I viewed it. He is a tall version of Mike Tyson. I knew I would be facing a new Mike Tyson. Once he hits you over.”

Joshua Defeats Klitschko

On Saturday night Anthony Joshua knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in the 11th round in front of 90,000 fans. This was most likely the most exciting since recently. The fight was going in favor of Joshua in the first couple of rounds and then Joshua really turned it up in the 5th round when he knocked Klitschko down. When Klitschko got up in the 5th round he went on to wobble Joshua and give him a hell of a round.

In the 6th round Wladimir returned the favor and knocked down Joshua with one punch. For a second it looked like Joshua was not going to get up but he prevailed and fought on. Joshua played it safe for the next couple of rounds; it wasn’t until about the 10th round where it looked like Joshua had regained his confidence. In the 11th round Joshua came out swinging and was able to put Klitschko down on the canvas twice. It wasn’t until Joshua had Klitschko in the corner that the referee stopped the fight.

According to Klitschko the two have a rematch clause in their contract. Klitschko said that as of now he wasn’t sure if he was going to want the rematch. The big fight all the people want now is Joshua vs Deontay Wilder. If or when the fight comes into fruition, who do you think will win? Joshua or Wilder?

Chavez vs Álvarez BROTHERS

Omar Chavez knocked out Ramon Álvarez in the second round of their fight. The fight was over shadowed by the Joshua vs Klitschko fight but none the less it was an entertaining fight. This was the rematch between the Chavez and Álvarez; in the first fight Álvarez won a decision. The rematch was made to excite the fans for the fight between their two more famous brothers. Hopefully the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Saul Canelo Álvarez also ends in a knockout.

Canelo vs Chavez Jr FACE OFF

Every now and then, HBO will do a face off for their most anticipated fights. Today the face off between Canelo and Chavez Jr has been released and boxing fans love it. It looks like the two have real beef between each other. Canelo talked about how Chavez Jr is a lazy embarrassment to Mexican boxing. Chavez Jr talked about how Canelo is an embarrassment to Mexican boxing for giving up the WBC belt in order to avoid Gennady Golovkin. If you want to watch the face off click the link HERE.

Canelo Rejects WBC!

Canelo was under “artificial deadlines” when he had the WBC and he was mandated to negotiate a fight with Golovkin. As a result Canelo dropped the WBC belt saying that he wanted to negotiate with Golovkin under his own terms. Now Canelo is still mad at the WBC saying that they made him look like he was afraid of Golovkin. Canelo says as of now he wants nothing to do with the WBC belt.

“From the very beginning, the WBC wanted to get involved with this fight, and when we as a team said ‘no, it’s not going to happen, there is no WBC, it’s not for a world title’ – we knew that at some point something was going to come up. We spoke to Mr. Sulaiman and told him that he was not going to be involved. He then came up with this Huichol belt and I knew that he was going to use that against me in a negative way, to make me look like the bad guy – that I want nothing to do with the Huichols,” said Canelo

“That not true, quite the contrary. My entire attire is made by Huichols. Since I’ve been 14 years old, I’ve been friends with people from the Huichol culture. All of my fights in Nayarit, they were there. My attire is being made by them, they have been invited, there is a Huichol fighter in my gym. This was just to be done to make me look like a bad guy.”

“This was done [by the WBC] with other interests, there is a company there on the belt. [The belt has] been going through a tour, conferences, exhibits at the hotels.”

“[Sulaiman] was pressuring me on a 15 day basis to make a decision on this fight with Golovkin, when I had some problems in Miami. You guys know about that. I can’t attend one thing and another at the same time. He made it seem like I was afraid of Golovkin, so I gave up the belt. So that’s why they are not involved, not now,” Canelo said.

“I just want you know one thing. I won that title based on sacrifice, based on training, based on balls, based on hard work and discipline and beating a great fighter in Miguel Cotto – so that [Sulaiman] can turn around and hand over it to a guy who didn’t even work out or train in the gym, didn’t even break a sweat, didn’t even fight to earn that belt. So you’re going to tell me that’s respectful?”

Briggs vs Joshua?

Currently the Super World Heavyweight Champion is Anthony Joshua and for those of you who don’t know there is also a WBA regular champion. The super champion has no mandatories while the regular one does. The big news is that Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs will be fighting for the title on June 3rd against a fighter named Fres Oquendo. If Briggs becomes the regular champion, that would give Joshua (the super champion) a good enough reason to fight him. If Wladimir Klitschko doesn’t want the rematch with Joshua then this would be a reasonable alternative for the time being. Here’s what Briggs had to say about the situation:

“I am super-impressed with Joshua. If (promoter) Eddie Hearn keeps Joshua away from me, I think he is the future of the (heavyweight) division, and I think he could have a long reign. I’ve been ordered to fight the vacant WBA world heavyweight title fight. I am going to win that with a vicious KO. Then-hopefully-I’ll get Joshua -or the winner of Joshua and Klitschko, if they can do a deal first. The champ (meaning Briggs) is unstoppable. I am 45, and I am in the best shape of my life. The momentum is around the world. People are going ‘Let’s go champ!’ and you can’t beat that. That’s positive energy, and I’m feeling great.”

Here’s what Joshua had to say about a possible fight with Briggs in the future:
“Shannon Briggs is a game opponent, an unbelievable self-promoter, and you can never underestimate him. He’s big. He’s got a punch from (seasoned) from the experience he’s gained from fighting the champs, so don’t overlook Shannon Briggs. He’s around, and he’s here to fight. So that fight could happen if it’s the right fight and it makes sense.”
