CANELO VS. CHAVEZ JR. PREVIEW & PRESS CONFERENCE VIDEO
By: Victor O. Garcia RCM Head Boxing Video Reporter
Las Vegas, NV (May 4, 2017) – For years, Cinco de Mayo weekend has been one of the biggest dates in boxing. This year the boxing fans are in for a big treat when two of the biggest names in boxing, take on each other in a non-title fight, but for honor and glory.
Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 34 KOs) will take on the son of a legend and former WBC Middleweight Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (50-2-1, 32 KOs) in a 164.5 catchweight bout, Saturday May 4th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The mega fight is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and televised Live on HBO PPV. The fight can also be streamed on the Canelo-Chavez.com website for $69.99.
A showdown between two Mexicans is different from others. When the fans hear that two Mexicans are squaring off, they already know it will be a war. When you put the two current biggest Mexicans in the same ring, it instantly becomes a classic. Fans have been waiting for this fight to happen for years. Especially both fighters who have had personal issues with each other for quite some time.
“It is personal and professional. It became more personal, because of so many things that he says, and the offenses to my person that he’s said.” Said Canelo.
“Thank God there is the fight of May 6 and me as I always like to speak above the ring and that day I am going to talk,”
As we all see, Alvarez has made it very clear how personal this fight is and there is no title on the line. Canelo has been working hard in camp, as he does for every other fight. The difference is the weight. Canelo doesn’t have to cut down for this fight, but he will have to put in weight which is new to him. Alvarez is the WBO Super Welterweight Champion which he won after defeating Liam Smith last September in Texas. The ten pounds difference does not seem to slow down the Mexican warrior and the weight gain has made him stronger. Come fight night we will see a better Canelo.
Chavez Jr has also shown confidence in this fight and has been showing dedication in his camp. “I do think I can knock him out,” Chavez Jr said. “I am a big fighter; I have fought in the light heavyweight division, a division where one punch can change the outcome of the fight. I think if I land the right punch, I can knock him out.”
In the past 3 years, Julio’s career has been questioned due to his poor performances and lack of dedication in his training. One of the biggest disappointments of his career was when Chavez Jr quit against light heavyweight contender Andrezj Fonfara, after getting knockdown in the 9th round of the match. This match against the guy that is considered to be the “face of boxing” has shown a positive change in Jr. julio has not looked more dedicated and passionate about a fight like he has for this one. Can we see the Chavez Jr everyone has hoped for come May 6th? The fans believe so and they will show up to support the man in huge numbers.
Lemieux vs Reyes
The undercard is stacked for this great event. In the co-main event we have the return of Canadian former world middleweight champion David Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs), who will battle it out against Mexican fighter Marcos Reyes (35-4, 26 KOs). David Lemieux is coming off a knockout win over Curtis Stevens, which happen less than two months ago. His quick return is unusual this late in a pro boxer’s career but the Canadian is hungry for blood and is hoping with a victory Saturday night, he can get a match up against Canelo Alvarez.
Matthysse vs Taylor
Argentinian star and former champion Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) returns to the ring after a long layoff. Matthysse suffered a huge TKO loss to top light welterweight fighter Viktor Postol back in October of 2015. His return is an important one which can possibly determine if he continues with his boxing career. He has a pretty complicated match up against Emmanuel Taylor (20-4, 14 KOs) who’s been in the ring with top guys like Adrien Broner, Antonio Orozco, and Chris Algieri. We can definitely expect a great match up from the two.
Diaz vs Avila
The opening televised bout could possibly steal the show. Two undefeated featherweights with a combined record 45-0 and 22 knockouts will be an exciting one. Joseph “Jojo” Diaz Jr (23-0, 14 KOs) will collide with Manuel “Tino” Avila (22-0, 8 KOs) in a ten round bout.
This fight can bring the winner up to the next level and become a top contender to a title match. Both fighters haven’t been in the ring since late last year and are anxious to get back in. Diaz is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Horacio Garcia in the co-main event of his co-promoter Bernard Hopkins. Manuel Avila, better known as “Tino” a Bay Area native, won a tough split decision over Jose Ramirez. The fact that these two fighters are young, hungry, undefeated and anxious for a title match proves how exciting this match up will be. Expect fireworks from this war.
