UFC Fight Night: Bader vs. Nogueira Preview

By: James Messer, Real Combat Media MMA Correspondent

San Paulo, Brazil (November 18th, 2016)– UFC Fight Night 100 is offering a highly-anticipated rematch, but is it possibly too late for all involved. The main event on the card was in question, but Ryan Bader will replace the injured Alexander Gustafsson in the main event against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on November 19th in San Paulo, Brazil.

The card will take place in the iconic Ibirapuera Gymnasium, but the order of the bouts hasn’t been publicly announced. One of the featured fights on the undercard is Claudia Gadelha vs. Cortney Casey. This will be the second UFC event on the day, as a card will take place in Northern Ireland earlier.

Gustafsson’s Struggles

UFC officials were scrambling to fill the main event after learning that Gustafsson had injured his back once again. It’s the same injury that he has been suffering from for years, but Gustafsson’s training staff was encouraged by his recent workouts and fully expected him to compete well against Nogueira. The back injury might have put a monkey wrench into Gustafsson’s career, but that won’t be determined until at least the early part of 2017.

Bader is at a Career Crossroads

This isn’t the first time that Bader and Nogueira have fought; they tangled at UFC 119 in 2010, with Bader earning a majority decision in the bout. He has led quite a storybook career, as Bader has been associated with the UFC for nearly eight years after winning “The Ultimate Fighter” reality television show. Bader has won six of his last seven fights, with his lone defeat coming at the hands of light-heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson.

Heading into UFC Fight Night 100, Bader is in a tricky situation. A victory against Nogueira will offer no advancement for his career, but a loss could end Bader’s time as a main event performer. He must dispose quickly of his opponent or risk losing everything.

Nogueira in a Bit of a Renaissance

Nogueira will be fighting in the same calendar year twice for the first time since 2001 as he has battled through a number of injuries that has limited his time in the octagon. His record has suffered significantly by going under .500 since 2010. The 40-year old Brazilian last competed at UFC 198 where he scored a first round technical knockout of Patrick Cummins.

The Undercard

The Gadelha/Casey fight is gaining plenty of interest in the MMA community. Clearly, Gadelha is the second-best female fighter in the women’s division behind champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. A third fight between the two is highly unlikely despite their past encounters offering plenty of excitement. The logjam at the top of the division must be broken before Gadelha is given another title shot.

Justin Scoggins is ready to take the next step with his career as he returns to the octagon this weekend in Brazil. Scoggins game plan is to dictate the pace of the bout by not allowing his opponent, Pedro Munhoz, to initiate any offense.

Thomas Almeida needs a victory in the worst way after struggling a bit in his past few bouts. The bantamweight won his first four fights in the UFC, but he has struggled with maintaining the expectations put on him by the fans. It’s time for Almeida to show more maturity in the octagon, and there’s no better place to make a career statement than in his home country.
