BERNARD HOPKINS VS. JOE SMITH JR. IS SET
Los Angeles, CA (October 17th, 2016)– Bernard Hopkins has a deal in place to face power-puncher Joe Smith Jr. at the Forum in Inglewood. According to The Ring and ESPN, the December 17th showdown, which will end Hopkin’s 24 month layoff, and will be his farewell bout.
Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KO) hasn’t fought since December of 2014, when Sergey Kovalev dropped him in the first round scored a shutout victory. He had previously won three straight over Tavoris Cloud, Karo Murat, and Beibut Shumenov, which earned him the IBF, IBO, and WBA “Super” light heavyweight titles.
Smith Jr. (22-1, 18 KO) had a huge upset in June with a first-round devastating KO of Andrzej Fonfara. Fonfara was a title contender at the time. Smith will enter the fight with seven knockouts in his last eight wins. Smith is ranked #7 on the Real Combat Media Boxing Rankings. Check out the Smith Ko below.
“Joe Smith is a big knockout puncher and he is coming off a great win over Fonfara, who had knocked out (Julio Cesar) Chavez Jr.,” De La Hoya said. “He will bring the fight to Hopkins. He is aggressive. It’s a legitimate fight.”
Smith is twenty-four years younger than Hopkins at age 27.
