Golovkin vs Lemieux Preview

By George A. Dampeer, Real Combat Media DE/DC Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (October 15th, 2015)–The highly anticipated unification bout between IBO and WBA Super middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin against IBF champion David Lemieux live at the Madison Square Garden Arena is finally upon us! We are now just a couple of days away from what many expect to be a barn burner or as Golovkin trainer, Abel Sanchez called it “a Hearns-Hagler fight”. With this being the first pay-per-view fight of the post Mayweather era, there are a range of expectations to be reached. One hand there’s the high expectation of a slugfest in both fights (co-main event with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez vs Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria) to gear up the support of not just boxing fans, but casuals and anyone else who felt hard done by the underwhelming May 2nd fight. At the same time there is also the lowered expectations seeing that the two are “non-American” fighters whom had never headlined a pay-per-view before. K2 Promoter made the subtle prediction of  “anything over 200,000..” as the standard for for success. If Mayweather can get 200-400,000 buys coming off a mainstream backlash against Berto and Pacquiao can get 350,000 buys against a relatively unknown in Chris Algeri, why shouldn’t this fight make it to 300-400,000 buys?

However, boxing isn’t fought by the buys and much of the pay per view numbers will be a far after thought for both fighters by the late evening of Saturday. Both fighters will be locked in the last bit of mental preparations before squaring off into a fight that is so big for both fighters for separate reasons. For Lemieux, a victory would be huge to put it mildly. To knock off the biggest “boogie-man” of boxing live on PPV would make make him an instant star. The best part of it is that he’s only 27 years old and makes for a pathway for big money fights in the near future. For “GGG”, this is his chance to become just two belts shy of a undisputed championship. It’s his chance to show doubters that he is the real deal at middleweight and is coming for all title holders.Being the favorite in a main event at the MSG comes with the pressure, so raising your game in front of your biggest audience will be the mission. While both have similarities in what to gain from this fight, they have different outcomes when it comes to a loss. While Lemieux may lose his IBF title, considering how the fight plays out he’s still a lively challenger in the division and due to his promotional ties he can still get decent fights. Meanwhile Glolovkin’s fearful reputation on boxing would be diminished. Much of his clamor is him being indestructible, and if he were to lose especially via KO it would be hard to imagine how to recover that. On top of that he loses his two titles and his chance to claim the WBC championship.

With all in mind and consideration, its hard not seeing Gennady Golovkin step his game up when his career is in need of it. Lemieux will give Golovkin all he can handle in the early rounds which is why you can count on him to defend and feel out David for the first round. Lemieux may make out the first round with more power punches, but Golovkin will be there keeping David at home with his jab. Lemuiex has wide arm positioning in attack and is ripe for straight shots. So count on GGG to jab and land one-two’s straight up the middle while figuring out Lemieux’s positioning in defense to really open up on him around the middle of the second round. Lemieux will have enough offense to keep Golovkin off momentarily but David’s best defense is his offense and ultimately lead to many openings for Golovkin. That being said, Gennday Golovkin should win via TKO of the 6th round in a absolute gem of fight that will leave us yelling “we ARE entertained!”
