REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

Zo-Crooks

By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent

Here we go again with another week of  Real Combat Media Boxing Weekly Report“Split Decision”!  We try to consistently keep you up on the latest news in boxing on a weekly basis.  This week we will cover fight week for Paulie Malignaggi vs Danny Garcia and Daniel Jacobs vs Sergio Mora as well as recap last weekends activities featuring Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal.  Mosley and Mayorga, Victor Ortiz, Money May as usual and Triple G and David Lemieux all make the lineup!  Let’s go!!!!

Sergey Kovalev is a force to be reckoned with!  The Krusher took on Najib Mohammedi in a light heavyweight title bout on HBO Saturday night.  This bout was a total annihilation!  Kovalev straight beat his ass!  No other way to say it.  I’m surprised that Mohammedi made it out of the first round.  We all knew this was going to play out this way.  At least Mohammedi made it to the third round.

What’s next for Kovalev?  There are only three names out there at this point and that’s Adonis Stevenson, Artur Beterbiev, and Andre Ward.  Stevenson is the name most mentioned out of the three for a while now.  Stevenson signed with Al Haymon and then moved to Showtime not too long ago and Kovalev is with HBO.  Politics as usual but any fight can be made in my opinion.  Then you have Ward who is just coming back into action this year after a lengthy lay off because of a contract dispute.  Ward is clamoring for a fight with Gennady Golovkin before taking on Kovalev.  Beterbiev might be that one!  Kovalev and Beterbiev have history together.  Both are fellow Russians from the same region and Beterbiev hold a victory over Kovalev in the amateurs.  Beterbiev is now the IBF number 2 ranked contender and he just turned pro 2 years ago.  Beterbiev can crack too!  He has power in both hands so that would be an interesting matchup!

Jean Pascal threw down with Yunieski Gonzalez!  Look I love a good fight, truly I do.  I just hate when the decision goes the wrong way. This fight was action packed!  Both men were throwing bombs and landing and taking some good shots.  Both were also rocked at times.  This fight stole the show on HBO Saturday night.  Gonzalez, a Cuban fighter known as “The Monster”, was more aggressive and more active than Pascal.  Gonzalez threw and landed more punches.  I had Gonzalez winning this fight although Pascal was awarded the decision.  I honestly expected more from Pascal coming off an 8th round KO loss to Kovalev earlier this year.  This fight is worthy of a rematch.

PBC featured Beibut Shumenov vs B.J. Flores Saturday night.  Former light heavweight titlist Shumenov won a unanimous decision victory against Flores to capture a vacant interim cruiserweight title.  Despite being outlanded by Flores, Shumenov walked away with the victory.  Shumenov almost got dropped at the end of the 12th round.  Flores landed a hard overhand right along with some nice shots to finish the bout.  Flores landed the harder shots in this fight.

Billy Joe Saunders was back in action.  Saunders took on Yoann Bloyer in what was obviously a tune up fight for him.  Saunders who is undefeated (22-0-12 KOs) took care of Bloyer in 4 rounds winning by TKO.  The southpaw from England dropped Bloyer twice in the third round and looked dominant throughout the fight.  Saunders was coming off of his November victory against Chris Eubank Jr.  Next up is Andy Lee on September 19th in Lee’s hometown of Limerick, Ireland.

Dereck Chisora made his return to the ring.  Chisora took out Beqa Lobjanidze by KO in the first round.  This was over from the first punch landed.  A strong overhand right ended it quick.  Chisora just came off of horrible loss to Tyson Fury in a rematch in November.

Hello Brooklyn…it’s fight week for Paulie “The Magic Man”  Malignaggi vs Danny “Swift” Garcia.  PBC has done it again…#ThankyouAlHaymon!  This welterweight bout is scheduled for Saturday August 1st in primetime on ESPN at 9PM EST/6PM PST at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.  This will be Garcia’s debut at 147 pounds in a classic New York vs. Philly matchup.  Garcia hasn’t looked his best in a couple of his last fights but maybe a move up to 147 will be better for him.  Word is that he looks stronger in camp with the move up.  Malignaggi is true veteran with good boxing skills so it wont be easy for Garcia.  I’m excited to see this one!

Daniel Jacobs and Sergia Mora will be the co feature for Saturday’s PBC event.  Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs is coming off of an impressive victory against Caleb Truax in April’s PBC matchup.  Jacobs looks to defend his middleweight title in front of his hometown crowd at the Barclays Center against former junior middleweight titleholder Sergio Mora.  Mora is on a 5 fight winning streak since his move up to 160.

It’s official!  Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will face David Lemieux.  Middleweight titlist Triple G will take on Lemieux on October 17th on HBO PPV at Madison Square Garden in New York.  Finally Triple G will get the test that many people feel he lacked on his resume.  Lemieux ain’t no punk!  Lemieux is coming off an impressive victory against Hassan N’Dam, which he dropped 4 times en route to a unanimous decision victory.  Meanwhile Triple G has laid down 20 opponents in a row!

Ricardo Mayorga is always entertaining!  Always!  Mayorga is scheduled to take on Shane Mosley next month.  He needs a mic in front of him whenever he speaks!  Mayorga has said that he will drop his nickname, “El Matador”, and retire if he doesn’t KO Mosley.  He feels he will KO Mosley within 3 rounds!  Can’t wait for the press conference.  Mayorga’s press conferences has been the best in the history of boxing…lol This fight will be available on PPV for 49.99.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather has yet to announce his opponent.  With his fight scheduled for September 12th, no name has been officially mentioned!  Of course we hear the Berto rumors but until Money says who, then it just words.  He might throw a curveball and announce Kell Brook.  Just have to keep waiting.  Meanwhile he has lived up to his nickname as usual.  Money bought his fighter Ashley Theophane a new whip this weekend.  Theophane received a brand new Chrysler 300 fully loaded from his boss!  I wouldn’t mind working for Mayweather myself!

“Vicious” Victor Ortiz was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.  TMZ reported that over the weekend Ortiz was charged with assault with a deadly weapon at a Kenny Chesney concert.  Ortiz and his brother was attending the concert when they got involved with verbal argument with another man.  Things escalated and turned physical.  The weapon was Victor’s boot for allegedly kicking the victim when he was on the ground.  Ortiz was booked and later released on $30 K bond.  This could get ugly!!!!
