New York, NY (May 5th, 2015)– Guyanese southpaw welterweight Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis, who stopped James Page at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2001 to win the World Boxing Association World Welterweight title, and who fought in five world welterweight title bouts, has died in a bicycle accident in his native Guyana at age 44.
On Monday May 4, 2015, at 12 noon, Lewis was riding a bicycle on the open road in Hope, Guyana, when he suddenly lost control of his bicycle, swerved into traffic and turned across the road, and was struck down by an oncoming motor vehicle. The driver of the vehicle is current in Guyanese police custody assisting in the investigation. Lewis was rushed to Diamond Hospital in Guyana, where he was pronounced dead.
Lewis reached 20-0-1 when he won the WBA title. He fought between 1993 and 2008, compiling a pro record of 23-4-2 with 20 knockouts, fighting such world class fighters as James Page, Larry Marks, Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, and Howard Eastman.
In 2006, Lewis became the first fighter to walk away from the ring during a bout he was winning against Dennis Dalton for the Guyanese Super Welterweight title, due to a need to use the restroom and take the dump. Lewis blamed his constipation on a prefight milkshake. Lewis returned to the ring a year later to win that title from Dalton via 12 round unanimous decision in 2007, his final career win.
