Carl Froch versus GGG Wembley Superfight on the Table: Why Cobra Will Win
Editorial By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Carl Froch promoter Eddie Hearn has entered into negotiations for Carl Froch to fight Gennady Golovkin. The bout could be at 168 pounds super middleweight, or at an agreed middleweight catch weight of 164 pounds with or without GGG’s middleweight 160 pound titles on the line.It would be the most significant bout by a world middleweight champion versus a world super middleweight champion in a step up bout since Gerald ‘G-Man’ McClellan fought Nigel Benn in his final ring appearance at New London Arena in 1995.
Froch, 37, would fight his final bout at Wembley Stadium in London. GGG is the best of all worlds for Froch in terms of money making opponents. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. got exposed in his loss to Andrzej Fonfara, and Bernard Hopkins at age 50 just is not a big draw for Froch. Sergey Kovalev is too high up in weight for Froch at 175 pounds and up.
For Froch versus GGG to work as a super fight, the British have to put mega money on the table. The best way to make it work is to have Floyd Mayweather versus Amir Khan in the co-main event, with GGG versus Froch immediately preceding. There you have two dynamic and sensational bouts for the mega card, with Floyd trying for 49-0 and making it.
If Froch is motivated for the challenge of GGG, the mega bout could be in July, August or September of 2015. The British have to be able to support Froch versus GGG with a mean card, not a junky one. There are many great fights from Kell Brook to Tyson Fury who would look good on the undercard.
Froch can beat GGG because Froch has the power and pizzazz to knock GGG out if GGG steps out of his comfort zone into the higher weight class. At 33 years of age, Golovkin may not get many more mega opportunities, and still has not seen the big money. Kelly Pavlik busted against Bernard Hopkins at the higher weight. Just how much power does GGG lose at 164 to 168 pounds? Not much. He walks into the ring at that weight. Froch would be the first power hitter GGG would face. The British have to be able to put at least a couple of million dollars on the table for both fighters to pull this one off. Froch versus Golovkin promises to be the fight of the year in 2015, and perhaps of one Great Britain’s best mega bouts ever, if Eddie Hearn can make it happen.
The pay-per-view gate for GGG versus Froch would be staggering as it is a bout of great public interest, especially in Europe. GGG would finally be tested against a quality power punching opponent. Froch might go for broke against GGG, or perhaps outpoint him in a brutal bout hard fought in the inside with a sharp and consistent game plan of attack.
GGG would have trouble cutting off the ring against Froch, and the outcome might be decided on how many to bully the other best over 12 rounds of hell. GGG would favored by knockout The bookies in England would still have Froch as the betting favorite if the bout were to go 12 rounds. A bet on GGG to defeat Froch by 12 round decision seems unlikely.
