Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.

 Tyson Fury (23-0, 17KOs) vs. Christian Hammer (17-3, 10KOs)
The Heavyweight with the big mouth is back.  In order to land big names like Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury must impress against Christian Hammer.  Fury used his enormous length and reach advantage to pick apart Dereck Chisora in his last fight. Hammer, to his credit is riding a 10 fight win streak.  However, he has not shown great knockout power, which will probably lead to his downfall against Fury.  I expect Hammer to try and work his way inside Fury’s long arms and test his chin.  We all remember how Steve Cunningham scored a knockdown against Fury almost two years ago.  Fury should box smart, keep his distance and pick off the smaller man with jabs and straight right hands.  Basically, use the same style that helped him destroy Chisora.  Maybe, just maybe, if Fury is looking past Hammer and has his mind on a World Heavyweight Title shot, he could allow Hammer to keep the fight close or dare I say: Pull of the huge upset win?  Not going to happen.  Hammer has been stopped in two of his three losses.  Sure Fury still has his share of doubters.  Heck, even I have some questions about his chin and stamina.  Hopefully, Fury shows some discipline and destroys Hammer like he is supposed to.  This fight won’t go the distance.  My Pick: Fury wins by a 7th Round TKO.
Carl Frampton (19-0, 13KOs) vs. Chris Avalos (25-2, 19KOs)
Avalos was initially supposed to face Guillermo Rigondeaux, but he backed out in favor of facing Frampton.  There has been a steady war of words and a shoving match at the weigh-in during fight week.  The atmosphere should be electric.  Frampton put on a masterful performance last September when he dominated former IBF Super Bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez.  He displayed top notch boxing skills and impressed me with the way he also brawled against Martinez, on the way to winning his first world title.  Avalos comes in riding a three fight KO streak.  His only two losses came by Split Decision against undefeated boxers.  He is the kind of fan friendly fighter who goes in looking for a knockout.  Let’s face it, Avalos does not want the fight decided by the scorecards.  His chances of winning a decision in Belfast, Northern Ireland are slim and none.  Frampton will use his jab and some lateral movement to win most of the early rounds.  I fully expect Avalos to apply smart pressure and work the body in order to get Frampton tired.  Frampton faded just a bit in his last fight, but Martinez did not have enough left in the tank to take advantage.  Make no mistake about it, this will be an exciting bout with Frampton having to overcome some rocky moments, maybe even a flash knockdown.  But in he end, he’ll do just enough to satisfy his fans and more importantly, the judges.  Another bitter, tough loss for Avalos.  My Pick: Frampton wins by Unanimous Decision.
